Sir Neville Marriner and the Orchestra of St. Cecilia Continue all-Beethoven Collaboration
Sir Neville Marriner, described as one of the most prominent figures in classical music living today, will conduct the Orchestra of St. Cecilia at The National Concert Hall on Monday 1 November 2010, 8pm in an all-Beethoven programme to include Symphony No. 1, 2 and the ever popular Symphony No. 5.
One of the most prolific classical music recording artists in the world, Sir Neville Marriner began his professional life as a violinist, first in a string quartet and trio, then in the London Symphony Orchestra, during which the founded the acclaimed Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in 1959. He left the London Symphony Orchestra in 1969 and founded the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, at the same time extending the repertoire of the Academy, and guest conducting symphony orchestras around the world. He served as Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Sudwest Deutsche Rundfunk Orchestra in Stuttgart.
His book released this year "Making Music: Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields" is a stylish hardback in which Christian Tyler chronicles this rare and most productive of relationships which has spanned 50 years. Sir Neville was twice honored for his services to music in his own country and has recently been awarded honors in France, Germany and Sweden.
For his National Concert Hall performance he will conduct the Orchestra of St. Cecilia in an all-Beethoven Programme. Formed in January 1995, the orchestra draws from the finest of Dublin's professional musicians and has a notable reputation for the excellent quality of its performances. It is firmly established as part of Ireland's musical life, particularly through its 10-year Bach Cantata project in which all 200 of Bach's church cantatas were performed.
Highlights of recent performances have been the complete Mozart Piano Concertos with Hugh Tinney, the complete Beethoven Symphonies and Piano Concertos conducted and performed by Barry Douglas and a Mozart series conducted by Kenneth Montgomery. Sir Neville Marriner and the Orchestra of St Cecilia performed Beethoven's 2nd and 3rd Symphonies at the National Concert Hall in 2009.
