National Music Day Held In Cork
A new short film was launched this week for National Music Day on the Cork City Music Education website www.corksmusicgeneration.com.
Featuring a wide range of local music celebrities and Community Music groups, the film contrasts the success of existing programmes with the areas of the city where children have little or no chance of learning a musical instrument or singing. The 15-minute short was created over the past fortnight by Frameworks films, Cork's Award winning community TV Production Company and features well known musicians John Spillane, Sean O Shea, Cara O Sullivan, Local rap artist GMC and the band Fred.
The film, website, and a programme of music in the libraries are all prepared to coincide with Cork's response to Music Network's national music education scheme, to be funded using U2's donation of €5m and a further €2m given by the Ireland Funds in America. The Music Education Partnership formed in the city includes all music education and community support organisations particularly those active in the city's most disadvantaged or RAPID areas. Speaking on the new film, John Spillane, who is well known for his commitment to community music says, "involvement in music can be liberating".
