Memento Mori Exhibition Opens at Roscommon Arts Centre August 17-25

By: Aug. 10, 2011

Memento Mori runs 17th - 25th August 2011 at The Gallery, Roscommon Arts Centre

Opening: Wednesday 17th August 5.30pm -7.00pm
All Welcome

Memento Mori is an exhibition of works by Roscommon-based artists curated by Caroline Walshe and Jennifer Walshe.

The artists featured in the show all work in widely varying ways, using a huge range of media from embroidered handkerchiefs and roadkill puppetry to drawing and tape collage. Central to all the works is a concern with memory and place; the commemoration of the now, the valorisation of the "littlest moments" whether they be a pen's mark on paper, the glint of autumn light on barbed wire or a glimpse of the moon through mottled glass.

Works include knitted bombs from transsexual artist Nollaig Dóttirson, whose work investigates personal and political violence recontextualised in a gender malleable space; embroidered handkerchiefs from Enda O'Rourke; roadkill puppetry and assemblages of natural and artificial detritus by An Snag Breac. Turf Boon presents drawings which measure out time and space; Freya Birren's films deal with memory and personal ritual in the digital age and outsider artist Caoimhin Breathnach's archive of photographs, star maps and tape treatments is presented in public for the first time since his passing.
