Juilliard Flautist Fiona Kelly Places Second In GHEORGHE DIMA Music Competition

Irish Flautist Fiona Kelly, currently studying in the Juilliard School of Music, New York, has taken 2nd place in the "Gheorghe Dima" International Music Competition in the Music Academy in ?Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The competition took place from February 7-11.

Fiona is currently pursuing her Master's degree at The Juilliard School, studying with Robert Langevin on a full scholarship. Fiona completed her Bachelor of Music studies at Trinity College of Music, London with Ms. Anna Noakes and upon graduation was awarded the TCM Trust's Silver Medal Award, the Friends in New York of TCM Award and the Edgar TP Comley Prize for excellence. While in London she won numerous awards including 1st Prize in the British Flute Society Silver Jubilee International Competition, the Royal Overseas League Sussex Prize and 1st Prize in the Trinity College of Music Soloist Competition. On winning the Royal Philharmonic Society's Julius Isserlis Scholarship, Ms. Kelly is now an RPS Young Artist. She has played concertos with The Locrian Ensemble at St Martin in the Fields and with TCM Symphony Orchestra at St. John's Smith Square and Blackheath Halls. With her wind quintet she has performed regularly at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, including a performance with the Haffner Wind Ensemble of London. Fiona is also a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and recently toured Europe under the direction of Vladimir Ashkenazy and Andrew Litton. She has been invited to perform for the Irish President Mary McAleese and has had performances broadcast live on Irish National Radio station RTÉ Lyric FM. Fiona can be heard on the Naxos recording of Hovhaness Wind Symphonies and on a recording of Haydn Scherzandi (Hoboken II : 33 - 38) for the Haydn Society of Great Britain.

Fiona Kelly won the Bernstein prize in the Juilliard School and performed the BERNSTEIN Halil, Nocturne for Flute and Orchestra on Friday, January 22, 2010 FOCUS! 2010: Juilliard Orchestra, Jeffrey Milarsky, conductor, Peter Jay Sharp Theater Juilliard in New York as part of the 2010 FOCUS! series.

While at home in Ireland, Fiona enjoys playing traditional Irish music with her sister, harpist Jean Kelly. Playing her Irish flute she is featured on a CD of contemporary arrangements of traditional folk tunes, called Toss the Feathers.

She has recently toured Ireland with the Irish Chamber Orchestra performing the Mozart Flute and Harp concerto with Jean.
