Carrigadrohid Tidy Towns Present Natural Gas in Concert Sept 9th

By: Aug. 18, 2011

On Friday September 9th @ 8.00 pm Carrigadrohid Tidy Towns Annual Fundraising Event will present Natural Gas in Concert

A performance by Natural Gas is not just for two or three hours of songs and instrumental music, it is an experience which will linger long after the final note has been played. And it is easy to understand why this is so - their sheer energy and enthusiasm, combined with good humour, musical abandon and a great sense of joie de vivre, guarantees a great night out for everyone.
Natural Gas is a four-piece group from Co. Cork, Ireland. They have a gigantic repertoire from slow and plaintive love songs to lively sea shanties to rousing ballads, poetry and recitations and live dance music played on a wide range of instruments including uilleann pipes, guitar, tin whistle, accordion, mandolin, banjo harmonica and bodhran. Although their roots firmly based in traditional music, the band has no problem in traversing all musical styles.

Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luchra will present music trail through the history of Ireland.
Ceoltori Sliabh Luchra are a group of 22 talented musicians singers and dancers, aged between 14 and 19 years of age from the Sliabh Luchra area, who have been training in Bruach Na Carraige Rockchapel for over a year, and are now performing a show "Musical Trail Through the History of Ireland". They are the only group in Ireland doing such a show.

This show has resulted in much research into the ancient music of Ireland, which is never heard now. Some of the tunes go back to the book of William Ballet of 1584, to the collection of John and William Neal of 1724, to the collection of Edward Bunting collected mostly at the great Belfast Festival of 1793, and many of the other famous collectors of traditional Irish music, and from such famous musicians as Mickie Cumba O Suilleabhain from Caherdaniel Co Kerry and Eoin O Suilleabhain from Caherciveen both of whom have long since passed on. Nicholas McAuliffe who is one of Irelands leading authorities on traditional Irish music did the research and teaching of the music. Nora Butler from Tipperary taught the singing, the teaching of the dancing was started by the late Joe O Donovan from Cork and continued by Patrick O Dea from Roscommon and Gearoid and Padraig Devanie from Connamara. The group are performing many of the old an almost forgotten dances, such as An Rince which was danced at the Fair of Carman in the year 1200 and at Kinsale in 1689 to welcome King James to Ireland. Other dances performed include The Blackbird,. The garden of Daisies, The Job of Journeywork, Madame Bonaparte, The Three Sea Captains, Rodney's Glory, as well as some old traditional Jigs, Reels, and Hornpipes. the history behind these dances is also explained.

Much of the music, song and dance in the show which is narrated throughout is linked to the history of Ireland from the arrival of An Tuaithe De Danann on Easter 1916.
