BBC Broadcasts Live from Wexford Festival Opera this Weekend

BBC Radio 3 will return to Wexford for a live broadcast from the National Opera House on Saturday 29 October.

Opera on 3 will broadcast the performance of Herculanum by Félicien David (1810-1876) live from 7.45pm, introduced by Sean Rafferty. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3

The opening opera of this year's festival, Herculanum is an epic tale of forbidden love between pagan royalty and Christian slaves, set against the backdrop and ultimate eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The production is conducted by Jean-Luc Tingaud and directed by Stephen Medcalf. The cast includes the soprano Olga Busuoic and the tenor Andrew Haji as the young Christian couple Lilia and Helios and Daniela Pini as the evil pagan queen, bass Simon Bailey as her brother Nicanor and Rory Musgrave as the prophet Magnus.

BBC Radio 3 listeners were treated to the Festival's critically acclaimed production of Guglielmo Ratcliff by Pietro Mascagni in 2015.

The 65th Wexford Festival Opera runs from Wednesday, 26 October to Sunday, 6 November and features 54 events including, Herculanum by Félicien David, Vanessa by Samuel Barber and Maria de Rudenz by Gaetano Donizetti. In addition to the three evening operas, this year's programme also includes three daytime ShortWorks operas, concerts, lunchtime recitals, a piano recital, a gala concert, lectures and talks. www.wexfordopera.com
