Abbey Theater Presents MACBETH; Concludes 15 May

By: May. 15, 2010

The Abbey Theatre is proud to present a major new production of William Shakespeare's psychological thriller MACBETH. This muscular new production of one of the most exciting of Shakespeare's plays, as well as being one of the darkest, will be directed by Jimmy Fay. MACBETH opens on Wednesday 7 April (previews from 30 March) and features leading Irish actors, AiDan Kelly and Eileen Walsh in the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.

Over 400 years after it was written, Shakespeare's dark depiction of ambition, guilt and murder continues to send a shiver down the spine. Rooted in the Irish landscape at the time of Cromwell, this new production from director Jimmy Fay, lays bare the darkest side of human nature. Fay's most recent work on the Abbey stage includes, THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI, THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD and AGES OF THE MOON.

Along with Kelly and Walsh, the cast for this superb play includes Malcolm Adams, Ian Lloyd Anderson, Charlie Bonner, Robert Donnelly, Gavin Fallam, Andrea Irvine, John Kavanagh, Grainne Keenan, Phil Kingston, Ronan Leahy, Michael McElhatton, Diarmaid Murtagh, Kate Nic Chonaonaigh, Bríd Ní Neachtain, Rory Nolan, Jason Quinn and Karl Shiels.

We may no longer believe in ghosts and witches but MACBETH has always been one of Shakespeare's most popular plays because of what it says to us about violence, ambition and morality. Set design is by Paul O'Mahony, lighting design is by Paul Keogan, sound design is by Philip Stewart, fight direction is by Paul Burke and costume design is by Catherine Fay. MACBETH continues The Abbey Theatre's commitment to presenting the work of William Shakespeare and follows the productions of ROMEO AND JULIET, JULIUS CAESAR and THE COMEDY OF ERRORS.

Macbeth will begin previews 30 March and officially open 7 April; the production will close on 15 May.
