Wexford Sinfonia Presents ELIJAH June 5
By: Gabrielle Sierra
Wexford Sinfonia presents a performance of Mendelssohn's dramatic and triumphant oratorio Elijah at 8:00 pm on Sunday 5th June in the O'Reilly Theatre, Wexford Opera House.
The Sinfonia welcomes the Oldham Choral Society of Manchester and conductor Nigel Wilkinson for this performance with soloists Rita Cullis, Kathleen Wilkinson, Declan Kelly and BrenDan Collins. Both Mr Kelly and Mr Collins will be familiar to Irish audiences for their performances in the country and beyond. Mr Kelly is currently performing with the immensely popular Irish Three Tenors. This oratorio tells the story of the prophet Elijah as he summons the people to righteousness, performs miracles, and struggles against idol-worshipping. It is written in a highly dramatic style, at times bordering on the operatic, and is an outstanding example of Mendelsshon's mastery of choral composition. Written for four vocal soloists, full symphony orchestra and a large chorus, Elijah is modelled after the much-loved baroque oratorios of Bach and Handel. The work is comprised of 42 movements in a traditional form of chorus and arias linked by recitatives. While the orchestral accompaniment is more lyric and richer than it's baroque ancestor, appropriate for a piece from the Romantic period, Mendelssohn's restraint and taste combine brilliantly to illuminate the drama of his chosen text.Love Theater in Ireland?
