"Traversing the rich, alluvial terrain between the poles of blues and country swing, Catherine Russell charges and shimmies through barrelhouse and society cabaret alike, taking us to the rooms where jazz was born." -Jackson Brown

ABOUT Catherine Russell: Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities - a genuine jazz and blues singer - who can sing virtually anything. A native New Yorker, Russell was born with an enviable musical pedigree. Her father, the late Luis Russell, moved from Panama to the United States to become a pioneering pianist/bandleader in New York City and Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, is an outstanding bassist and vocalist who has performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, she has appeared on and off Broadway in both musical theater and straight dramatic roles. Russell has also taught at the Berklee College of Music and has sung with the likes of Paul Simon, Samantha Fox, Jackson Browne, Ricki Lee Jones, Diana Ross, and more. She sang with Al Green on "Late Night with David Letterman," and Bette Midler on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." Currently, Russell just finished a tour with Steely Dan. Russell has released two solo CDs, Cat and Sentimental Streak, to rave reviews, landing her spots on Billboards Jazz Charts, JazzWeek and Living Blues Radio Chart as well as a top 10 download on the iTunes Jazz Chart.

Russell also performs in jazz clubs, cabarets and festivals around the world, including the Chicago Blues Festival and the Bern International Jazz festival, to name a few. She has also appeared twice at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's New York Cabaret Convention at Lincoln. She also received the prestigious German Record Critics' Award in the Jazz category, Living Blues magazines 2008 critics' poll as "Artist deserving More Attention," and her album Sentimental Streak was also chosen by the L'Academie du Jazz in France as a finalist for the Prix du Jazz Vocal in 2008.
