The overture to Donna Diana is perhaps the best known work by Emil Nicolaus von Reznicek and survives as a testament to his extremely popular, light and whimsical style. Celebrated pianist Benjamin Frith returns to the SOI as soloist in Brahms’ D minor Piano Concerto - a piece that has been described as the ‘mightiest utterance since Beethoven’s Ninth’ demonstrated by its grand symphonic style. We close the concert with Tchaikovsky’s glorious Fifth symphony – a perennial favourite of audiences all over the world.
