BWW Previews: ICONIC HINDI PLAY SIR SIR SARLA Now In Gujarati

Those who are keen watchers of India theatre know that the wealth of Indian performing arts really lies in regional languages. From small towns to villages, the culture of arts for entertainment runs deep in India.

No wonder then that despite a globally acclaimed English theatre scene in the country, plays in regional languages continue to do exceptional in the country.

Gujarati plays that have in fact laid the foundation of the flourishing theatre scene in India. So, the news that Makarand Deshpande's iconic Hindi play - Sir, Sir Sarla will now open in Gujarati is something that theatre lovers would look forward to.

A moving story between a teacher and his students and the unique bond they share, the play directed by Makarand himself, will be his debut in Gujarati theatre. The play is produced by Manhar Gadhia Productions and has actors such as Pratik Gandhi, Bhamini Oza Gandhi, Shivam Parekh and Ojas Rawal.

Makarand, talking about the performance says, "I love Gujarati as a language and I really wanted to see my favourite characters come alive and convey their emotions in Gujarati." About collaborating with Manhar Gadhia for the Gujarati version, he adds, "Manhar Gadhia saw the first show of Sir, Sir Sarla in Hindi in 2001 and said I want to do this in Gujarati, he had sensed it's success before anybody else could!"
The play first opened in 2001, written and directed by Makarand Deshpande, Rajendra Gupta portrayed the role of Sir, Sonali Kulkarni enacted Sarla and Anurag Kashyap was Phanidhar. When the play reopened in 2012, Makrand gave life to Sir's character, Ahana Kumra enacted Sarla, Sanjay Dadhich portrayed Phanidhar and Faisal Rashid played Keshav. This run will also see Pratik Gandhi and his wife Bhamini Oza Gandhi together for the first time on stage.
