János Egri grew up in a musical family. Since he was seventeen he has been one of the busiest accompanying musicians on the Hungarian scene. He is closest to mainstream jazz and his first instrument is the double bass but he has also contributed to many pop and world music productions. He is perhaps best known as a founder member of Trio Midnight: this brought him international fame but his collaborations with Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Gyula Babos, Ferenc Snétberger, Tony Lakatos and Mihály Dresch were also highly memorable. He has played with such international luminaries as Frank Zappa, James Moody, Tony Scott, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Lee Konitz and Al Foster.
