The Final Production
On the intimate Joe Frank black box theater at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Houston, Theater LaB Houston returns to its roots that night on April 23, 1993 with the American premiere of
KISS ME by Richard Bean
From one of England’s most prolific writers Richard Bean is an award winning playwright; his stage works include One Man, Two Guvnors, Young Marx, Made in Dagenham and The Nap.
About the Play: London, Notting Hill, 1929
A forbidden kiss that changes everything.
Richard Bean’s play is a beautiful and unorthodox love story about two people struggling to escape the guilt and ghosts of the past, set against the shifting world of London post-World War I.
The play is set in London, in 1929. A man and a woman meet. She wants a baby, he wants to oblige. But it’s not as simple as that. Of course, not. Both of them are driftwood from the literal and existential calamity of World War I. Both are plagued by memories, regrets and guilt. Both are driven by a desire to create meaning and find connection. But, as they say, you can’t always get what you want.
Stephanie is a 32 year old widow. It has been ten years since her husband died in WW I, a war that decimated a generation of husbands and boyfriends. She is working class. Stephanie lives in a shabby boarding house and drives a lorry for a living. She has an emancipated spirit. Stephanie wants a baby and is prepared to go forward with her plans.
Peter is 28 years old. He has a buttoned-up, upper-crust, banker appearance. He runs his family’s prosperous business. Carrying an existential guilt for surviving the carnage of WW I, Peter has taken it upon himself to help war widows become mothers. Like Stephanie, Peter has secrets and is struggling with ghosts from his past.
“Kiss Me is romantic, intelligent, provocative and guaranteed not to disappoint.”
The Guardian
Directed by Linda Phenix and featuring Kacie Adams and Calvin Hudson
