ON REPEAT Exhibit Postpones Opening Due to Harvey

The exciting and innovative new art exhibition, On Repeat, presented by Linda Clarke and Gus Kopriva of Clarke & Associates and curated by renowned poet and art critic Raphael Rubenstein, will now open on October 7 due to complications from Hurricane Harvey.

Featuring a diverse group of 14 established and emerging artists, the show focuses on textile art using patterning and repetition which draw on a range of influences in repeating motifs.

On Repeat, which takes its name from a song titled On Repeat by the band LCD Soundsystem, will have its opening reception on October 7 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the exhibition space, 301 East 11th Street, 77008, and will now run through December 14. The public is invited to attend the reception and meet and mingle with the artists.

"Given the severity of the aftermath of Harvey and the inability for many people to work, travel and resume a normal life right now, my partner Gus Kopriva and I have determined that it is best to postpone the opening of our landmark exhibit, On Repeat," says Clarke. "To be able to present the highest quality show and to allow people associated with On Repeat time to recover, we plan to open with a reception on Saturday, October 7th instead of September 9."

"This unique exhibition is multi-generational, bringing together dynamic artists who work in a range of mediums, including painting, drawing, assemblage and printmaking," says curator Rubenstein, also a professor at the University of Houston. "The repeating motifs are a means to excavate and undermine the formal logics of their supports, while often incorporating the stuff of everyday life into their art. Turning away from the serial formalism of Minimalism, the artists embrace the handmade and the rhythmic properties of textiles."

Artists represented in On Repeat include Jennifer Bartlett, Heather Bause, Christopher Cascio, Catherine Colangelo, Cheryl Donegan, Jacob El Hanani, Rachel Hecker, Gabriel de La Mora, Tameka Norris, James Radcliffe, Drew Shiflett, James Siena, Michael Toskovich and Claude Viallat. Rubenstein took great care to select artists of several disciplines whose work is shown and collected both nationally and internationally.

Among the goals of On Repeat is to acknowledge how younger contemporary artists, such as Radcliffe and Bause, situate their work in dialogue with the Supports/Surfaces group of the 1970s, represented here by veteran French artist Viallat, one of the founders of the movement. Also reinvented is the Pattern & Decoration movement, which finds echoes in the extravagant patterning of Colangelo's work.

Following the pioneering work of Bartlett, the grid of modernist abstraction is taken apart and remade, often with unconventional materials and irreverent intent by Donegan, Hecker, de La Mora, Norris and Shiflett. In the work of El Hanani and Siena, rule-based methods and small-scale formats draw the viewer in to an intense, meditative engagement. Cascio and Toskovich each playfully twist the legacy of geometric abstract painting to their own ends.

Rubinstein is a poet and critic known for his influential writings on painting and his book of micro-narratives The Miraculous (Paper Monument, 2014). He is a contributing editor to Art in America magazine and a professor of Critical Studies at the University of Houston's School of Art. His awards and honors include Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government and a Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writer grant for his blog, The Silo.
