MU And CTC Present DIANA OF DOBSONS

By:

Continuing on its mission to recognize and promote plays by women, Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company (MU) is teaming up with Classical Theatre Company to produce a staged reading of Cicely Hamilton's DIANA OF DOBSON'S at Chelsea Market Theater on November 5, 2018. Written in the early twentieth century, the play was largely ignored both for its unashamed confrontation of class conflict and the fact that it was penned by a woman.

DIANA follows a young working class English woman who unexpectedly comes into a large sum of money and decides to live a life of extreme luxury at a Swiss resort while it lasts. During her escapade to the resort town of Pontresina, Diana hobnobs with the aristocratic set, all of whom are completely unaware of her true economic situation. The play throws into sharp relief the effect money, or at least the perception of it, has on people's expectations and estimation of others.

"I am delighted to have the chance to honor Cicely Hamilton's intelligent, warm, and timely script with a reading," said director Elizabeth A. M. Keel, a recent graduate of University of Houston's MFA program in Theatre and locally renown playwright. "We have assembled a cast of all-star actors who have been seen in beloved productions by one - or both - companies. Much like the play's heroine Diana, Mildred's Umbrella and Classical Theatre Company are inviting you to treat yourself to this unique, one-night-only production."

DIANA OF DOBSON'S runs for one night only, November 5, 2018, at Chelsea Market Theater, nestled between the Museum District and Montrose. A brief question-and-answer session with the actors and director will follow the reading. Tickets are free and reservations may be made at www.mildredsumbrella.com. Donations are welcome and encouraged. For more information, call 832-463-0409 or e-mail info@mildredsumbrella.com.

Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company (MU) is committed to repairing the gender disparity on industry stages by producing works by women, featuring strong female protagonists, and creating a counterscript for mainstream society. As Houston's premier female-focused theater, MU seeks to challenge audiences and theatre artists by creating and performing bold, innovative, and fresh theatrical works grounded in the best traditions of the dramatic arts. Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company's 2018-19 season is supported by the Houston Arts Alliance, Texas Commission on the Arts, and individual funders.
