Subtitle: New production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera will make its Houston premiere before traveling to the Metropolitan Opera.
Houston Grand Opera will open its winter season with a new production of SILENT NIGHT, which will premiere in Houston on January 23, 2026, ahead of its engagement at the Metropolitan Opera.
The opera, adapted from the film Joyeux Noël, recounts the 1914 Christmas truce through a trilingual libretto by Mark Campbell set to the Pulitzer Prize-winning score by Kevin Puts. Director James Robinson helms the new staging, which brings renewed focus to the opera’s themes of wartime humanity, shared music-making, and the fleeting nature of peace.
Under 40 Friday will return for the January 23 performance, offering $40 Orchestra-level seats to audiences under 40 following age verification. The January 25 matinee will serve as HGO’s Military Appreciation Day, recognizing veterans and active-duty service members. The opera will run two hours and 25 minutes, including one intermission, and will be performed in English, French, and German with projected English translation.
The production will introduce tenor Duke Kim and soprano Sylvia D’Eramo in their anticipated HGO debuts as Nikolaus Sprink and Anna Sørensen. Ryan McKinny appears as the German Lieutenant Horstmayer, alongside Iurii Samoilov as the French Lieutenant Audebert and Thomas Glass as the Scottish Lieutenant Gordon. Jack Swanson joins the cast as Jonathan Dale. Kensho Watanabe will make his company debut conducting the HGO Orchestra.
Tickets range from $25–$210 and are available at HGO.org or by calling 713-228-6737. Students with valid ID may purchase $25 tickets beginning one month before opening; details at HGO.org/tickets.
