By:

Parents Must Be Dead, a spoken memoir piece about the death of parents written and performed by Christine McHugh will be presented by Kumu Kahua Theatre as a part of their Dark Night Series on Monday, April 9th at 7:30 pm, Kumu Kahua Theatre, 46 Merchant St, Honolulu, HI 96813. Tickets are $15 and available through Brown Paper Tickets https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3373927

Christine McHugh is a seasoned director of solo shows with over 25 titles to her credit including multiple Fringe offerings and the United Solo Theatre Festival. Christine says, "I thought it was time to find out just how transformative this process that I was facilitating for others was and so I chose the recent milestone event of the death of five parents in my life. This experience took me deep into an exploration of what it means to love "unconditionally" and I wanted to share this personal and eye-opening journey with an audience. It's a landscape that all of us either have or will eventually navigate and I wanted to do it with a measure of humor and vulnerability."

Christine McHugh is a filmmaker, theatre director, performer and a teacher. Her film, On The Nature Of Hotness won the 2013 New York City International Film Festival for Best Short Comedy and was the official selection at ten film festivals in 2013 and 2014 including Cannes Court Metrage, Seattle Gay and Lesbian and the Starz Denver Film Festivals. She directed DonnaLou Stevens in her viral music video, Older Ladies that has close to 17 million views on YouTube as of this writing.

Kumu Kahua Theatre's Dark Night Series was created to offer other theatre groups, playwrights, and performance artists the opportunity to present their work to the community. This series is presented during dark nights, evenings when Kumu Kahua's regular season shows are not being performed. To be part of the Dark Night Series artists must submit a proposal, which is reviewed by the Board of Directors of Kumu Kahua. From these proposals, projects are chosen that Kumu Kahua feels will promote the development of the theatrical arts and benefit local artists. Kumu Kahua sees this as another way to enhance and enrich the cultural diversity and artistic climate of Honolulu.
