Kumu Kahua Theatre Presents SPECIES OF ETERNITY, 10/10 - 16

By:

Kumu Kahua Theatre presents as part of its Dark Night Series, Gadfly Theatre's Species of Eternity. Performance Dates are Oct 10 - 16, 2011. Prices range from $5 to $15.

It's been twelve years since the volcano erupted. There's no new growth yet, but that doesn't stop Warren from taking little Grover on an impromptu adventure in an attempt to get back to nature. Unfortunately, their journey is interrupted by an encounter with a prehistoric nomad of "questionable" motives. Through their struggle to apprehend the mystery of beginnings, pinecones fly, squirrels are slaughtered, and a bonfire of glacial proportions is set ablaze. An unorthodox campfire story (and the ash left behind) becomes a stage of reinvention for them all. Thus are we given a window on the origin of a new species - a Species of Eternity.

Gadfly Theatre was founded in New York City by three University of Hawai'i at Manoa alumni. Their inaugural production, The Mustard Seed, ran at the American Theater of Actors in Manhattan in November of 2009. For their second original show, Alvin Chan, Chris Cappelletti, and Tom Offer-Westort elected to return home to the theater community most responsible for their creative development. Kumu Kahua has a long tradition of encouraging original work by local artists that aims to strengthen the relationship between Hawai'i and its inhabitants; Gadfly is proud to be associated with an organization that shares so many of its central artistic values.

ABOUT KUMU KAHUA THEATRE
Forty-year-old Kumu Kahua nurtures local playwrights, offering them a sounding board and venue, and telling Hawai‘i's story through plays about these islands, its people, its cultures and contemporary life. Without Kumu Kahua, seminal works about Hawai‘i by Hawai‘i playwrights-such as Lee Cataluna's Folks You Meet in Longs and Edward Sakamoto's Aloha Las Vegas-would not have made it to the stage, and into people's hearts. Founded in the early 1970s by University of Hawai‘i graduate students, Kumu Kahua has gained national and international recognition for its regional program.

With more than 200 plays to its credit, the theater's artistic and technical experience attracts some of Hawai‘i's most talented playwrights, actors, directors, designers and other theatre artists. The audience at Kumu Kahua is treated to the unique experience of hearing their voice on stage and seeing their lives unfold in the action of the play.
