BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Your audition should be filmed in front of a clean background, with no backlighting, limiting ambient noise as much as possible. If using an iPhone, the video should be shot in horizontal NOT vertical format.

For ALL roles: Please prepare a brief monologue no longer than 2 minutes in length.

NOTE: The roles of Addie, Brian and Beatrice will sing a cappella during the play (they sing in a church choir). If auditioning for one of these roles, please include a brief cut of a song of your choosing, sung a cappella and in a straight tone style (without vibrato).

Set in a suburban American community in the '90's, YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXEGESIS is a memory play about a pastor and group of teens in a church youth group.

SEEKING:

No roles will be understudied.

ADDIE: Character is female-identifying, any ethnicity, 17 (18+ to play 17). Fragile, sincere, quirky, she takes herself very seriously. She's skittish about physicality and sexuality. Hyper fixated, bordering on obsessive, yet at moments other-worldly. Strong singer with experience in group singing and harmony.

BRIAN: Character is male-identifying, any ethnicity, 17 (18+ to play 17). Socially awkward, inexperienced and a bit immature for his age. Rule-abiding, he’s got an openness and innocence and has led a pretty sheltered life. Full of non-threatening, ineffective rage, but doesn’t know it. Strong singer with experience in group singing and harmony.

BEATRICE: Character is female-identifying, any ethnicity, 16 (18+ to play 16). Uncomfortable in her skin, Bea is very smart and a bit of a wiseass, younger than the others, but you wouldn’t know it. Sometimes arrogant in her opinion that she knows more than everyone else, she often acts out in a self-dramatizing way. Raised by her church organist mom who has little patience for Bea’s extracurricular activities. Strong singer with experience in group singing and harmony.

CHRIS: Character is male-identifying, any ethnicity, 18 (18+ to play 18). Handsome, charming, soulful. From an affluent background and a difficult family life, Chris has developed a toughness to deal with his home life but isn’t afraid to reveal his vulnerability. Has a traditional masculinity, an ease and confidence that comes with it, but sees himself as a poetic soul. Please note any singing ability.

REVEREND KIM: Character is female-identifying, any ethnicity, late 30s-early 40s. Youth pastor in the United Church of Christ. Devout, charismatic, slightly cult-leader-y, but also immature. Struggled hard to get where she is and has the independent mindset of someone who has overcome a great deal of trauma. Has a traditionally wholesome quality, smart, sporty, straightforward. Please note any singing ability.
