Roles range from the young girlfriends that every soldier has left behind at home, to a tough talking, no-nonsense lesbian secretary to General McArthur. Must be adept at period styles, and able to transform vocally and physically. Sings 5 songs in 5 different styles, from comic, brassy belt (think Betty Hutton, Martha Raye or Ethel Merman) to low torch song (early Judy Garland or Lena Horne) to 40's big band swing singer (Dinah Shore, Helen Forrest, etc.) Strong belt to C, legit alto down to F below middle C, plus soprano to G Artie:
Male, mid 20s-early 30s. Sly and funny and sophisticated… he loves to be the joyous, even anarchic, presence in a roomful of “squares”. Though not much older than Stu, he becomes Stu’s mentor, showing him the hidden world of gay people in the army. Artie loves the game of it all, the strength and wiles needed to get by, and thrive, and have sex, in a homophobic army. Strong dancer versed in Tap and Jazz/Ballet. Must be expressive through dance. Ideally a light tenor.
Rotelli:
Male, 20s. Part of Stu’s squad. A sweet warm guy born in Sicily who has yet to lose his accent, and who – as with many immigrants of the era – loves America and his fellow Americans completely. Good mover. Tenor.
Cohen:
Male., Mid 20s. A scrappy little Jewish guy, his energy and enthusiasm during Basic Training endear him to the other squad members and he is easily accepted; Strong dancer well-versed in Tap and Jazz/Ballet.
Soldier #2:
Male. Mid 20s. In addition to being an ensemble member, this actor will Play the roles of the Lieutenant and Interrogator -one of two bureaucrats in charge of slowly breaking homosexuals in the army. Strong singer and dancer, versed on Tap and Jazz/Ballet.
