Person in Charge 1 / Person in Charge 2 (These characters are any age, any ethnicity, transgender or nonbinary) They are the creators of this theatrical experience. With an air of authority and an abundance of natural charm, they greet the audience and set the stage, literally and figuratively. It is through their eyes that we see this play. They should be prepared to collaborate on creating their text and should be comfortable interacting with a live audience.

Jake (This character is early 40s, white, he/him) He is the very fit and surly middle brother. An alpha-male banker who’s got a Black ex-wife and mixed-race children, and who’s entirely aware of the ways in which he holds up an unjust system every day. And it’s working for him. Smart and ruthless, he’s the kind of guy who breaks a Nintendo controller when he loses and doesn’t take no for an answer. He takes charge and takes up space.

Drew (This character is around 40, white, he/him) The successful younger brother with a real spine. While he is touchy-feely, there is an underlying hostility. He is pitying and riddled with therapy language. He may be a teacher and a published author — but where’s the new novel? Similarly to Jake, he is winning, despite, or perhaps even because of his flaws.

Matt (This character is mid-40s, white, he/him) He is the super sensitive, Harvard graduate with the most promising future. Though his seeming lack of ambition, burdening student debt, and unfulfilling job at a nonprofit has led him to move home with his father, precipitating a family crisis. Good looking but badly dressed.

Ed (This character is mid-70s, white, he/him) A retired engineer, Ed is the widowed father of the household who is tired of living with his son, Matt. He is wry, affectionate, and takes his sons’ ribbing good-naturedly. To spread some Christmas cheer, he buys Christmas pajamas for everyone to wear.

Appa (Dad) (This character is 50s-60s, 1st generation Korean-Canadian, he/him) The owner of ‘Kim’s Convenience Store’, who is searching for his replacement to take over the family business. He is a gruff, undemonstrative traditionalist who loves his family. Speaks English with a Korean accent.

Umma (Mom) (This character is 50s, 1st generation Korean-Canadian, she/her) Married to Appa. As dutiful wife and mother, she struggles to mend her broken family while balancing her own happiness. Speaks English with a Korean accent.

Janet (This character is mid 20s-early 30s, 2nd generation Korean-Canadian, she/her) Daughter of Appa and Umma. Though she is unmarried and still lives at home, she is thoroughly assimilated, with dreams of a career in photography. Energetic, optimistic, and strong.

Jung (This character is late 20s-early 30s, 2nd generation Korean-Canadian, he/him) He is the son of Appa and Umma, with a 2-month-old son. Ran away from home at 16 and hasn’t spoken to his father since. A bit haunted and lost.

Alex & Others (This character is 20s-mid 30s, Black, he/him) Has excellent language and comedic chops. A variety of roles.

Character Breakdown

Leo Joseph-Connell (This character is 21 years old, white, he/him) Lanky, fit, and shaggy, he’s a free spirit, a self-described hippie, just arrived on his grandmother’s doorstep in New York City after a months-long cross-country bike trip marred by the tragic death of his best friend. On the cusp of adulthood, Leo is unable or unwilling to accommodate himself to the narrow expectations of his mother concerning what it means to grow up, yet at the same time he willingly accepts her ongoing financial support. Though outwardly easygoing, he’s a lost young man, struggling to find stability and hope for the future.

Vera Joseph (This character is 91 years old, white, she/her) Leo’s grandmother, tiny and physically frail, but still feisty and direct in that old-school New York way. She lives a mostly solitary life after the death of her husband. Though her senses are failing in old age, she remains mentally sharp, unapologetically pragmatic, and strongly opinionated. A lifelong member of the Communist Party USA.

Amanda/As Cast (This character is 19 years old, Chinese-American, she/her) A wealthy, beautiful, energetic, flirtatious, and fashion-forward design student at Parsons, who drunkenly comes home with Leo one night. Aspiring to international art stardom, she speaks her mind and goes after what she wants.

Bec (This character is 21 years old, white, she/her) Leo’s girlfriend, strong and athletic, though also somewhat tense. She breaks up with him when he arrives in New York because she’s fed up with Leo’s selfishness. Bec has the direction Leo lacks and yearns to start the next chapter of her life, wanting to do something truly meaningful.
