BREAKDOWN

[TONY]
Male, 18-30, any ethnicity.
A tough and sensitive young man and founder of the Jets, who is trying to escape gang life; Tony finds himself violently torn between his allegiance to his new love and the gang he cannot quite escape. Falls in love with Maria and meets an untimely death; tenor, Bb-high C.

[RIFF]
Any ethnicity. A tough, athletic, quick-tempered leader of the Jets. He seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance. Tony's best friend, he is eventually murdered. Extremely strong dancer/mover.

[MARIA]
Female, 18-28, Latinx
Puerto Rican, a lonely and romantic young woman; she falls in love with Tony, a member of the Jets, and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs; Bernardo's sister; soprano, Bb-high C.

[ANITA]
Female, 20-35, Latinx
Puerto Rican, powerful, strong-minded, and assertive; she tries to shield Maria from the dangers of the gangs; Bernardo's girlfriend and every bit his equal, and Maria's friend and protector; strong dancer; mezzo-soprano, F-F.

[BERNARDO]
Male, 18-35, Latinx
Puerto Rican, proud, strong, handsome, tough, extremely dangerous. Seeks to carve out territory for his gang in a hostile landscape; Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend; leader of the Sharks; extremely strong dancer; baritone, G-E.

[CHINO]
Male, 18-30, Latinx
An angry and, at times, naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful; suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo's.

[JETS AND SHARKS ENSEMBLE]
(Chorus / Ensemble): Males & Females, 18-40, any ethnicity.
MUST be strong dancers. Additional featured roles will be cast from the ensemble/chorus.
