A new music-theater piece that is drawn from incidents of gun violence in places of faith--a meditation on American rage, race, and forgiveness.

If you’re submitting for THE ECHO CHAMBER: Please submit a video of you performing a brief cut from a song of your choice, preferably an R&B song, a soul song, or an African American spiritual. If you’re submitting for THE WOLF: Please submit a video of you performing the piece of text at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5zy20hpig2pi047/AABA6rd3pQVEUHjxszY-h7oPa?dl=0 as a rap or spoken word piece. This is a piece of THE WOLF’s text from the libretto of WATCH NIGHT. Please be aware the piece of text contains references to racial violence.

No roles will be understudied.

SEEKING:

THE WOLF - skilled in rap and/or spoken word. White. Male-identified. Late teens to early 20s. A murderer and chat room Rock star. Moves beautifully.

THE ECHO CHAMBERSoprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass. Any races or ethnicities. 20s to 40s. Any gender expression. A group of singers who have familiarity and/or training in ballet, modern/contemporary, jazz, and/or hip-hop. Tap dance and/or body percussion is a plus. Vocally they take on the energy and style of the moment, from gospel choir to media hounds with paparazzi zeal to chanting white supremacists. A diverse, unpredictable group, THE ECHO CHAMBER is the choir in the AME church, the inmates on death row, the media in the scrum, and the racists in the White Supremacist chat rooms. They are the contemporary Greek Chorus for our social media curated lives. Beyond the instrumentation, they control the sonic pulse of the show.

ROLES CAST:

[CAST] The Supernatural Contralto / Countertenor. Black. Any gender expression and any age. Otherworldly twin energy elements. Their vocal quality is operatic and ethereal.

[CAST] Josh Bari-tenor: classical/gospel/spoken word. Jewish and Black. Male-identified. 30s-40s. Reporter. Opportunistic young journalist. A slick soulful crooner with the ability to shoot the gift.

[CAST] Shayla Soprano: classical/negro spirituals. Black. Female-identified. 20s-30s. Young Christian Corrections Officer with a strong sense of justice and righteousness. A vocal code switcher who transitions seamlessly between AA vernacular (recit) and operatic (aria) styles.

[CAST] Winters Bass: negro spirituals/gospel. Black. Male-identified. 40s to 50s. AME Pastor and Shepard of his flock. Seated strongly in African American spirituals and Gospel traditions.

[CAST] Ms. Laura Alto: classical/negro spirituals/gospel. Black. Female-identified. 60s. Matriarchal church figure. Mature, soulful mezzo soprano in the African American tradition.

[CAST] Rabine Tenor: classic/cantorial. Jewish and White. Male-identified. 30s to 40s. The Rabbi of Spring Hope Synagogue. Music theater experience, and knowledge of classical, traditional, Ashkenazi cantorial tradition, gravitas.

[CAST] Saul Tenor: classical, music theater. Jewish & Black. 20s to 30s. Josh’s younger brother. A Believer.

[CAST] Miss Summers Classical, music theater. White. Female-identified. 30s to 40s. Wolf’s 10th grade English Teacher.
