BREAKDOWN
MOTKE ZEIDEL:
Male, 20s (character ages from 11 to 29 in the play). A child of privilege; the only son of a Jewish doctor and glove-maker. He witnessed his father being beaten in the street by Polish soldiers at age 11 and begins the play scarred by this experience; timid and without direction. After a rebellious phase he finds his calling as a lawyer and leader of those facilitating survival in the Jewish ghetto. Must be compelling and speak well.
NAIOMI ZEIDEL:
Female. Mother of Motke. Ages from 42 to 60 in the play. A hard-working professional, she is intelligent, dedicated, and caring, with great warmth, inner strength and conviction. Obstetrician, Chairperson of the Medical Institute of the University, Board member of TOZ, a social services organization.
BRUNO KITTEL:
Male. SS Commander. Early 20s. An historical figure, Kittel is an educated, cultured, psychopath. He began as a professional actor from Berlin. He has a flippant manner and treats mass murder as a form of theater. Playing guitar is a plus for this role. This actor will also play: Pietr, age 13 a friend of Motke; Abba Kovner, student, poet and Jewish resistance leader; Soldier attempting to loot a hospital.
