SEEKING:

Scout:

Caucasian girl, 8-12. Must be able to convincingly play a 9 year old girl. Tomboy. Smart, curious, a bit of a hot temper. Can be argumentative. Hungry to learn and very practical. Loves her father and brother dearly. Secure in her world. She's the center of the story, has to have the ability to process information internally, really listen and think and be reactive as well as pro-active; she grapples with the nature of the world and comes to a new understanding of her father and the way things are. Must be able to work comfortably in an Alabaman dialect; general southern dialect sufficient for auditions.

Tom Robinson:

African American Male, mid to late 20s. A field laborer, must physically look as if he could do manual labor. Dark complexion preferred but not mandatory. He has one major scene, the trial in Act 2. Tom knows his life is on the line; he's earnest, honest, and compassionate. We should be able to care about him without being sentimental; he's a decent man caught in horrible circumstances. Native intelligence though not at all educated. Straightforward and trusting of Atticus when giving testimony. Reluctant and hesitant to disgrace Mayella, and defensive with Mr. Gilmer. Must be able to work comfortably in an Alabaman dialect; general southern dialect sufficient for auditions.

Mayella Ewell:

Caucasian Female. 19 years old; the eldest of 8 children. Abused psychologically and perhaps sexually by her father. Uneducated. A scrappy survivor with a temper and a will of her own. Conflicted and torn between being loyal to her father and telling the truth. Isolated, lonely, appears frail; does not consider herself a victim. She's defensive and on edge throughout the trial. Must be able to work comfortably in an Alabaman dialect; general southern dialect sufficient for auditions
