SeekiNG:

JANE

38, Caucasian. She is a poet who currently works teaching poetry and proctoring tests. Her husband, Roy, died a year earlier, leaving Jane and her young daughter, Maude. Jane’s primary relationships are with Marrell, her best friend, Marrell’s husband Tom, and Alan. The four of them have been friends since college days. Jane is in a fog, and it unclear whether her forgetfulness has been exacerbated since Roy’s death or if it is a new phenomenon. She is very insightful and incisive, however, when something penetrates the fog. Jane’s formerly hardy moral compass has been knocked askew and she is unsettled, but she is looking for a new path.

MARRELL

CHARACTER SINGS IN THE SHOW. PIANO SKILLS A PLUS BUT NOT NECESSARY.

38, African-American. She is a jazz singer, composer, and new mother. Her son, Henry, is about three months old. She and her husband, Tom, have been together since they were twenty. Marrell and Jane have been best friends since college, and that relationship is in many ways the primary one for both friends. Marrell is smart and friendly. Though she has been blindsided by the rigors of new parenthood, she is emphatic that she can still connect with her friends and with her former life.

TOM

Caucasian, in his early 40s. He met Marrell, Jane, and Alan when they were college students and he worked on the grounds. They are basically of an age, but Tom’s different social status is an ongoing, if subterranean, issue for the couple. Tom feels alienated from Marrell and from his own dreams.

ALAN

38, Caucasian, Jewish. He makes a living as a mnemonist—he has an infallible memory for every detail of every conversation he has ever heard. He is gay and single, and is looking for something to do that requires effort on his part; he wants to work harder. Or at least he says he does.

JEAN-PIERRE

Late 30s, French. Jean-Pierre works for Doctors Without Borders, as a doctor. He is the outsider in this group of old friends. His inclination to action, to service, to straight answers, is anomalous in this company.
