A lack of food and a nasty leg wound have left him physically weak and emaciated. While his feet are more solidly on the ground than John’s, like John he doesn’t have the courage to make more of what life has given him. Used to being in control, he struggles with being an invalid.

Simon:

African American, 50s-60s. Has lived his life as a slave, raised in the Jewish faith. Has tremendous dignity and a powerful aura of spirituality. Exudes wisdom, if not intellect. His is the most solid presence in the room, and even though he’s lived a life taking orders, his sense of self demands respect, and he has little trouble inspiring confidence. This is a man you listen to.

John:

African American, mid 20s. Also a slave, raised in the Jewish faith. A rebel, a loose cannon – very intelligent, but not wise. Powerful, crafty, a survivor. Struggles with moral issues, but you never know which side of the issue he’ll come down on. This is an angry young man, full of a lifetime of rage and defiance, but without the courage to successfully engage in his new-found freedom.
