Female, 40-early 50s. Black / African Descent. A professor of psychology and the mother of a teenage son; recently separated from her White husband. She is emotionally raw, but trying to keep it together behind a professional façade. A strong, confident and self-possessed woman.
Scott Connor:
Male, 40-early 50s. White / European Descent
Kendra’s estranged husband; Scott is an FBI agent of predominantly Irish ancestry; he takes pride in his family’s long tradition of military service; though he can be rigid in his views, he has a warm, sensitive side and is a deeply loving and devoted father; has obvious contained power, but when pushed can explode.
Officer Paul Larkin:
Male, 25-early 30s. White / European Descent
An intelligent, congenial young police officer with bold career ambitions who lacks actual life experience; while always trying to do the right thing, he often says the wrong thing at the wrong time; his naivety can appear comic and inappropriate at times.
Officer John Stokes:
Male, 45-60. A tough, no-nonsense, career police officer who is used to having people listen when he talks; he has paid his dues, knows the rules, and has no hesitation enforcing them.

CAST. 40s. Character actor who must be able to play multiple Christmas characters who have now aged. They must be able to go from one very distinct character from another and must have great comic timing.
Woman
CAST. 40s. Character actor who must be able to play multiple Christmas characters who have grown up. The actor must be able to go from one very distinct character to another and must have impeccable comic timing.
Bartender
CAST. Male 60s-70s. Character actor. He must be the straight man for a lot of jokes, but also be able to communicate directly to the audience with subtle, simple looks. He is willing to go on whatever journey the patrons of his bar take him on. He is a great listener and must be impeccable at giving the stage over to the other two actors without distracting.

Female, late 40s-late 50s, any ethnicity. North Carolinian, born and raised. A religious and socially conservative woman. Warm, genuine, caring; she has a maternal instinct despite the fact that she has no children of her own. An old friend of Jen’s family. Married to Tim. She sees herself as openminded, but her life hasn’t brought her into contact with many people who challenge the world-view she grew up with. A prolific and enthusiastic baker, she has been chosen as a contestant for The Great American Baking Show.

Jen:
Female, early 30s, any ethnicity. Born and raised in North Carolina, she has brought her southern manners with her to Brooklyn, where she has made a home with her fiancée, Macy. An experienced event planner with a compulsive attention to detail. Considerate, kind, and enthusiastic, she wants to see the best in people, though she doesn’t always see it in herself. Her traditional upbringing is often at odds with her newfound liberal lifestyle, and planning her lesbian wedding in her hometown brings that tension to a crisis point.
Macy:
Female, early 30s, Black / African Descent. Born and raised in New York. Progressive, sharp, outspoken. Very confident in her belief system, and she doesn’t hesitate to challenge those who think differently. Innately curious and inquisitive. She has a deep love for Jen, although she is impatient with Jen’s willingness to make allowances for her conservative southern friends and family. She is who she is, and she won’t make compromises to coddle people’s feelings.
Tim:
Male, late 40s-60, any ethnicity. Della’s husband. A good southern boy. He’s a plumber with a great work ethic, who takes pride in providing for his household. He is comfortable in his traditional values, and has never seen any need to question his beliefs. He is loving and loved, though perhaps not completely in touch with his emotions.

Female, 32. Asian. Afzal’s eldest daughter, American born of South Asian origin-brilliant, elegant, wry, wounded, stubborn and charismatic, a Harvard grad, now an aspiring writer, but also the older sister taking care of the family in the wake of her mother's passing, the guiding consciousness of the play.
Mahwish (Supporting):
Female, 26, Asian. Zarina's younger sister, American born of South Asian origin -very cute, very sassy, very loyal, very loving, eager to marry her boyfriend of ten years, but beholden to her father's will, which has it that she cannot marry her boyfriend until her older sister marries, equally comfortable as the cheerleader in high school as she is in the mosque on Friday afternoons.
Afzal (Supporting):
Male, 60, a Pakistani man who has immigrated to the U.S. and has made a life in Atlanta, owner of a large fleet of taxis, quick-witted, traditional, expansive, gregarious, for those who know the culture, he is the quintessential Punjabi, large hearted, large mouthed, generous, emotional and volatile, is the loving father of Zarina and Mahwish, and every bit the charming and benevolent immigrant patriarch. Note: The following role has been cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.
Eli (Supporting):
Male, 30-35, White / European Descent. A convert to Islam, and now an Imam in a disenfranchised part of Atlanta, committed to community service, able to lead a congregation as well as connect one on one with people, grew up in a very rough and urban section of Detroit and identifies himself with the plight of the poor and urban American, serious, smart and sensitive, a romantic at heart, but also a certified plumber who is as comfortable with a wrench in his hand as he is with a book. Note: The following role has been cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.

Christian:
Male, 10-15, any ethnicity, Alison’s older brother; oldest of the three children; strives to be the leader, but is sometimes overshadowed by Alison’s strong personality; seeking a singer (pre-pubescent) with a natural sound, good sense of harmony and pitch.
John:

Male, 20-30, any ethnicity. Roy, a young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination; singer with a strong clean 70s pop sound - to a B.
Older Alison:
Female, 30-49, any ethnicity. Narrator; now a self-aware adult, she is able to reflect insightfully on her own life and her relationship with her father before his tragic death; must be a strong singer who can move

Helen:
Female, 30-39, any ethnicity. Alison’s mother; frustrated, exhausted by her tumultuous marriage; has spent her life trying to be a good mother and wife while turning a blind eye to the irreverent activities of her husband;
