BREAKDOWN

Dion DiMucci:
Male; Late Teens thru Early 20s: Italian American with Star Quality; A Teen Idol; Tough New Yorker with Bronx Attitude; Actor must have the chops to handle character believably at the peak of his Success, as well at the nadir of his Heroin Addiction, and coming back through Recovery again -- and also the complexities of his relationship with his Bronx Italian Mother and Father, with whom he maintains an intimate if sometimes tumultuous relationship throughout the story. A Great Singer in 1950’s DooWop Style -- Actor must convey a One-Of-A-Kind Singing Voice that would go on to have some 50 Chart-Toppers; A Rhythm-Singer with Really Great and Versatile Range -- Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony, Pop Baritone to A4; Playing Guitar (or at least some familiarity with Guitar, or willingness to learn) is a Big Plus.

Susan Butterfield:
Female, 20’s. A Beautiful Young Girl -- A Country Girl from Vermont who moves to the Bronx and knowing no one else in this new neighborhood, she meets DION. A pure, simple and sweet Girl-- Smart, Stoic and Strong; NOT of Italian Descent, and of a fair complexion, so much so that she stands out to Dion immediately as not being from this Bronx Italian Neighborhood; She becomes the Love of DION’s Life, and his Support System through it all; Must be a First Class Singer who moves very well. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony, Warm Folk/Pop Chest Voice (Not brassy belt), A3 - C5.

Johnny:
Male; 20’s thru 40’s; May be any Race or Ethnicity. Ideally Seeking a Name Actor, or a Familiar Face in this Role; A close friend from the neighborhood and a presence throughout DION’s Life; He often serves as both a sounding board and voice of reason to DION, speaking what’s in Dion’s Conscience -- Tough, Funny, and Charismatic. Can come across as a real New Yorker; Strong Actor and Singer; Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony. Rock/Blues Style Baritone to F#4.

Pat DiMucci:
Male, late 40’s-late 50’s.) DION’s Bronx Italian-American Father; a former Vaudevillian Performer himself, he has become a Stage Father and pushes his son’s Career; Perhaps a bit brusk and seemingly self-centered, but he has a Heart of Gold; Sense of Humor, for sure; Has some Quirkiness about him -- perhaps a Christopher Walken Quirkiness; Must be a Strong Actor and Singer. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony, High Baritone to A4; Moves Well.

Frances DiMucci:
Female, late 40’s-late 50’s. DION’s Bronx Italian-American Mother; Shouts only when necessary and it is often necessary; Like most Bronx Italian Mothers, she is the force that holds her family together; Good Comic Timing, and Good Actress. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony.

Bob Schwartz:
Male, 50’s. 1950’s Record Company Executive; Jewish; Good Comic Timing. He is the Brains of the Outfit -- the Brother of GENE -- and they work together in the Music Industry. They are successful enough, but like most Music Industry Executives, always hustling. DION is the kind of Once-In-A-LifeTime Talent every Record Executive Dreams of and they know it -- except that he won’t listen to a word they tell him. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony -- possibly a Tenor. And Moves Well.

Gene Schwartz:
Male, 50’s. 1950’s Record Company Executive; Jewish; Good Comic Timing. He is a little dull, a little Slow -- the Brother of BOB -- and they work together in the Music Industry. They are successful enough, but like most Music Industry Executives, always hustling. DION is the kind of Once-In-A-LifeTime Talent every Record Executive Dreams of and they know it -- except that he won’t listen to a word they tell him. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony -- possibly a Baritone. And Moves Well.

Willie Green:
Male, 50s-60s. African American, with great speaking/singing voice, He is the Older African American corner guitarist who influenced Dion in his Music; Role has a solo performance of Son of Skip James. (If Actor can play guitar well enough to accompany himself for this number, or at least have some familiarity with Guitar or the willingness to learn, that is a Big Plus.) Strong Actor/Singer/Mover. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony; Strong Blues-Singer, Baritone to D4.

Ruby:
Female, May be any Age, but likely 20’s-30’s; May be any Race or Ethnicity. A Soulful and Angelic Presence, she inspires DION during the height of his Last Acid Trip; She is the catalyst who brings him up from the Bottom and Leads his Call to Redemption; First Rate Singing Voice for Excellent Solo Number. Must Sing in a pop/rock style, and be good with vocal harmony; Bluesy Belt, comfortable with Riffing and Improvising, to B4; Moves Very Well.
