Seeking:
Maria Rainer:
Mid-late 20s. Postulant at Nonnberg Abbey. Adventurous, joyful, courageous spirit. Tomboy. Free-spirited, warm, gentle, kind and determined. Loves the outdoors and singing. Unsure if she really wants to be a nun. Always has good intentions, but is obviously not suited for the obedience needed to remain in the abbey. Strong singer/actor needed; ability to play guitar a plus. Musical theatre mix/soprano.
Capt. Georg von Trapp:
40s. Father and patriarch of the von Trapp family. Retired Austrian naval captain. After the death of his wife, he raised his children the only way he knew how - in a military fashion - to repress the sadness of his loss. Underneath, he is warm, understanding and determined. Ability to play guitar a plus. Baritone. Excellent singer/actor with commanding presence.
Mother Abbess:
Late 40s-50s. Head of Nonnberg Abbey and mother figure to all of the nuns. Caring and gentle, but also a strong leader. Legit soprano with wide vocal range. Very strong actress.
Rolf Gruber:
Actor must be able to believably play 17-18 Rolf goes from an intimidated telegram delivery boy to an intimidating man with military power. Liesl's suitor. Very pleasant; somewhat aggressive in a gentle way. Tenor who moves well.
Baroness Elsa Schrader:
Late 30s-40s. Attractive and wealthy. Love interest of von Trapp, until he falls for Maria. Only knows the high society way of life. A baroness of taste and elegance; sophisticated, dignified and mature. Alto. Strong actress/singer.
Max Detweiler:
30s-40s. Music director for the Austrian government. Charming, witty and very funny. Good friend of both the Baroness and von Trapp. Could be gay, but far from flamboyant. Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who enjoys the good life. Baritone. Strong comic actor/singer.
Herr Zeller:
40s. Stern and unsmiling. Nazi sympathizer whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line. High baritone.
Franz:
50s. Butler. Dry wit and sense of humor. Rather formal, but not without spirit. Very German and loyal to the Fascist cause. Baritone.
Frau Schmidt:
50s. Housekeeper. Has been overseeing the children prior to Maria's arrival. Strong, domineering and opinionated. Stoic. Very little personality. Does her job efficiently but without affection. Soprano or mezzo.
The von Trapp Children:
Liesl:
Actress must be able to believably play 16-17. Liesl is a starry-eyed girl becoming a woman. Needs guidance and friendship, and finds it in Maria. Oldest child. Blossoming into a young lady with an interest in boys. Has a maternal side, and cares very deeply for her younger siblings. Mezzo. Strong singer with some dance ability.
Friedrich:
Age 14. Tough exterior; very much tries to be “the man” of the family in his father's absence. Sings well.
Louisa:
Age 13. Rebellious; idolizes Liesl. Strong singer.
Kurt:
Age 10. Gentle and mischievous. Boy soprano with strong falsetto.
Brigitta:
Age 9. Smart, insightful. Not at all shy about sharing her observations/opinions. Reads a lot. Strong singer.
Marta:
Age 7. Very sweet and gentle. Strong singer.
Gretl:
Age 6. Youngest. Must have the “cute factor”. Strong singer.
