Breakdown

Lee Strasberg, 30. introvert, obsessive, socially awkward, born in Ukraine, came to Lower East Side age 7. Yiddish = first language and formative culture. Has a touch of the Talmudic scholar in his inflections. Can be warm, but rarely shows it. Loses it when frustrated by what he sees as an actors unwillingness to work hard. But can be gentle and patient when he feels that actor is giving his all, regardless of"results" Voracious reader, devours books on ancient history.

Clifford Odets, 25, intense, Jewish, New York by way of Philadelphia, extroverted, a tendency toward bi-polar mood swings, hungry to connect with the world and find his place in it. Before he's 30, he'll be on the cover of Time Magazine.

Doubled:
Morris Carnovsky (also plays Kurt Weill in two scenes) 35, similar background (urban Jewish) but more"refined" is already accomplished actor. Highly respected. Actor's actor. Fully, unambiguously committed to Group, understands sacrifice required to make such endeavors work. Also very politically engaged. Communist at one point. But always an actor first. Lotsa gravitas which is why he's playing elders while in his 30s.
Kurt Weill: strong German accent. Just arrived, fleeing Nazi's. Has very eclectic tastes. Loves American pop culture of the time. Loves to collaborate, does it well. Enthusiastic. He's very opening and willing to find a community of artists in US, his new home. Inside, a mass of feelings about what he knows is coming for European Jews. Sings a song from Johnny Johnson, his new musical that Group produces.

Doubled:
Kazan: 21 intense, ambitious, manipulative, physically confidant, out for number one. Has pulled himself out of a lower middle class, narrow world of his father's rug business and got himself into Yale Drama School, worked in frat houses etc to put himself through. Ruthless, brilliant.
Luther Adler: Born acting. Like Stella, grew up in his father's yiddish theatre. Very confidant but also diligent as actor. Not so much in"real life" where he's a bit of a 1930s version of a"slacker" Attractive, likes clubs and night life. At the same time, his commitment to Group, once he joins, is very deep.

Doubled:
Cheryl Crawford: 29 a fairly closeted lesbian who grew up in a very repressive, religious (Christian) family in Akron Ohio. Talks rapidly, always has to do lists and deadlines running in her head. Brilliant producer. Platonically in love with Clurman and Strasberg.
Frances Farmer 22 Magnetic, beautiful, troubled. Needs to escape Hollywood. Has been hoping to join something with the Group's sense of purpose for a few years. When she gives of herself, it's total, which causes her great suffering.
