CONTRACT

LOA Actors: $375/wk min, every hour over 25 hours per week will be paid at $15/hour SM: $450/wk, min, every hour over 25 hours per week will be paid at $15/hour ASM: $413/wk min, every hour over 25 hours per week will be paid at $15/hour

SEEKING

Equity actors. We are seeking to assemble an ethnically diverse cast. It is imperative that we see actors of all ethnicities

We are also seeking a Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager. (see separate SM notice for details)

PREPARATION

Please prepare two brief classical pieces—one for each cis-gendered role. As this is an unusual request, pieces do not have to be memorized, but must be prepared. Both speeches must come ideally from the same the same play, or the same playwright’s body of work and be in British RP.

All actors who audition must possess strong vocal projection and the ability to be facile with classical text.

Performance: March 5-24 (ART/NY Mezzanine Theatre); Extension: June 3- July 14 (Central Park, Rockefeller Park, Carl Schurz Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park)

The Importance of Being Earnest will be performed two ways: every other performance the entire cast will change role/gender.

EPA Procedures are in effect for this audition.

An Equity monitor will be provided.

BREAKDOWN

The Importance of Being Earnest will be performed two ways: every other performance the entire cast will change role/gender.

There will be an indoor run and an extension in multiple park venues. Actors who audition must be available for both parts at the time of the audition.

We are seeking to assemble an ethnically diverse cast. It is imperative that we see actors of all ethnicities.

All actors who audition must possess strong vocal projection and the ability to be facile with classical text.

All roles and pairings are listed below.

SEEKING: (4 Females and 4 Males)

Algernon Moncrieff /Cecily: (Male, 25-27): Nephew of Lady Bracknell, cousin of Gwendolen, falls in love with Cecily, friend of Jack, orphan (parents both deceased), raised and educated in privilege, secure in his societal standing.

Cecily Cardew/Algernon: (Female, 18-23): Ward of Jack, in love with Algernon, appears innocent yet wise beyond her years, manipulates Miss Prism and Algernon, dreamer, sheltered but knows her mind, has a dream to marry a man named Earnest.

Gwendolen Fairfax/Jack: (Female, 20-25): Daughter of Lady Bracknell, in love with Jack, knows her mind, pragmatic, very smart but not traditionally educated, knows how to manipulate people (from her mother), romantic and wants to marry a man named Earnest.

Jack (Earnest) Worthing/Gwendolen: (Male, 27-30): Friend of Algy, in love with Gwendolen, orphan and raised by a wealthy single gentleman, educated but without proper family and connections, fearful of commitment.

Lady Bracknell/Chasuble: (Female, late 50s – late 60s): Mother of Gwendolen, aunt of Algernon (and Jack), manipulative, outrageous, snobbish, haughty, myopic, concerned with public appearance, fancies herself as flexible and generous (which she is not).

Merriman/Prism: (Male, 35-45): Butler to Algernon, discreet, experienced in working with the upper class, unflappable, droll.

Miss Prism/Merriman: (Female, 35-45): Spinster, educator, working class who serves the upper class, hiding a dark past, formerly a romantic now prim and proper, secretly in love with Chasuble.

Rev. Canon Chasuble/Bracknell: (Male, late 50s – late 60s): Country chaplain, in love with Miss Prism, fancies himself a bachelor, excitable, a bit pompous and boring.
