BREAKDOWN

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

HENRY: 30's. Male. Chinese American. An engaging and enthusiastic storyteller. A charismatic people person with an optimistic outlook and a sense of humor. An amateur detective who can lead an audience through a murder mystery in a way that makes them lean forward in their seats and get them excited about the story. He would be capable of leading a compelling TED talk. In addition to his master of ceremony abilities, at his core his energy is thoughtful, observant and rational. A very likable guy.

GEORGE: Mid 30's-Early 40's. Male. Chinese. Henry's father. We see him in two eras: as a younger man, GEORGE is dashing and romantic, in an old-fashioned Hollywood way. He is handsome, passionate, sexy and single-minded in his devotion to LEENA, his love interest. He has a forward leaning energy. Direct, sincere, doesn't play games. Years later, we see him as a father: He has a reserved and stoic quality that indicates something hidden under layers. He has a natural authority and ease in his role as father and is a loving guide to his son.

LEENA: Mid 30's-Early 40's. Female. Chinese American. Henry's mother. We see her in two eras: as a younger woman, LEENA is playful, sincere and passionate. She is an heiress at war with her privilege, feisty yet elegant. Later, we see her as a mother, sensible, warm, with a sharp intelligence, fiercely protective of her family. She has a natural ease and sensitivity, an elegance and comfort in her own skin.

TOM: 30's. Male. Chinese American. Dashing, suave and slightly sinister. Tom, in both eras, is a great actor, able to play at great charm and also great vulnerability. He can believably play someone very sympathetic and sensitive. And yet, even as he can play at someone who seems put together, there is something feral lurking right beneath the surface. A con man and game player who enjoys toying with his marks.

JESS: 30's. Female. Any Race or ethnicity. In a relationship with Henry. Sweet, passionate, grounded, practical. Hyper intelligent and emotionally mature-- able to navigate tricky relationship terrain with sensitivity and rationality. She has a natural enthusiasm when it comes to solving mysteries. In that sense there might be something a bit nerdy about her. In addition, there is also a layer to Jess that is slightly interior, hard to read, reserved.

WALTER / DETECTIVE: WALTER. 60's +. Male. Any race or ethnicity. An old family friend and warm father figure. Compassionate and caring, but stern when he needs to be. / DETECTIVE: 60's. Male. Any race or ethnicity. An old school, seen-it-all-before kind of guy who is behind the times and has a slight chip on his shoulder about it. There is still something of the beat cop in him. Thinks he's funnier than he is.

LEENA (OLDER) / PAT: LEENA (OLDER) 60's-70's. Female. Chinese American. This is LEENA many years later, sweet, soft and grounded. Quick minded. Even when she is sick and in the hospital she still carries the that same elegance about her. She commands authority through her natural ease and grace. PAT: Female. Chinese American. 60's-70's. LEENA'S friend and her opposite: tough, no-nonsense, allergic to projecting kindness or softness. Suffers no fools. Gruff.
