New play with music. Tackles the monumental topic of the environment and the future of our planet. The play explores the themes of climate change, deforestation and extinction in two distinct locations: Barro Colorado Island (BCI) in the Panama Canal and the city of Churchill in arctic Canada. Drawing on interviews with people such as botanists, paleontologists, climatologists, indigenous community leaders, polar bear tour guides and trappers, the piece gives voice to real people whose stories make the reality of present crisis tangible and viscerally felt, inspiring us all to make the profound changes this moment demands.
Seeking (all listed roles are available):
Notes: Seeking actors who are smart, interesting, compelling and at ease with sometimes complex language, to play scientists and “real people”. Please read the descriptions carefully, and submit only if you are “right” for a role and you are available to work throughout the contract dates.
Phyllis / Polly:
Late 20s/30s, any ethnicity. Twin sisters, played by one actress. Characters are leading lady-types, but a bit quirky, a little too intense, a bit too emotional. Polly is adventurous, headstrong, passionate. Phyllis is more of a homebody, typically the more grounded of the sisters. Both are very intelligent, probing thinkers. Some singing ability needed.
Allie / Emmanuelle:
30s/40s, any ethnicity. Performer must be good with accents. Singing ability needed; has one solo, which is a comic torch song. Both roles are passionate scientists. Actress needs to be a very good talker, with ability to communicate scientific content in a clear and compelling way. Allie is funny, big
hearted, friendly. Emmanuelle is French Canadian, intense. Ideally, this actress is an alto.
Rob / Ship Spotter / Dr. Medvedkov:
Caucasian characters, 30s/40s. Actor must be good with accents, have singing ability, and be a good talker who can handle detailed scientific language. Good character actor sought, but can be a leading man/character-type. Characters are all somewhat eccentric, brainy. Rob is a normal guy, charming, scientist. Ship Spotter is a Scandinavian, computer-type eccentric. Dr. Medvedkov is a Russian climate scientist. Ideally, the actor playing this role is a tenor or high baritone—voice should be more poppy than legit.
Julie:
Seeking actress 18+ to play age 16. Actress must be able to read 16. Character is a teenager, any ethnicity. Sings. Julie is the US representative for a world delegation of teenagers promoting environmental awareness. She’s intelligent, science-minded, a little geeky/socially odd, very intense and surprisingly tough. Weird and smart (a little bit mad…)
