BREAKDOWN
Nick Carraway:
The narrator of the play who is kind and gentle. He has been called the eyes that observe the other characters and their actions. He is also the confidant and link to the other main characters. He enlightens us about the other characters and their behaviors. Nick is Daisy's twice-removed cousin, knows Tom from college, and is the next door neighbor and friend to Jay Gatsby. Each character needs him for a variety of reasons. Tom needs him as an ally, and Daisy needs him as a friend. Gatsby needs him to be the bridge between his past and his future with Daisy.
Tom Buchanan
Daisy’s husband. He is wealthy and was a college football hero. “He was one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors anti-climax.” Tom was a big man on campus and has a high degree of self-importance. You get the impression that Tom is a severe and powerful man, a person who portrays the body and mentality of a bully.
Daisy Buchanan
Enchanting. She is delicate and captivating. She is southern with a voice that sounds like money. Daisy’s personality is magnetic.She has a sadness yet a loveliness about her physically and vocally that make her difficult for men to forget. Her astonishing charm captivates people and draws them to her.
Jay Gatsby
The most mysterious character of the story. He is a romantic idealist with a disarming smile. His life is revealed as the story unfolds in fragmentary and intersecting narratives, with false trails and contradictions. Gatsby is a larger-than-life character who is eloquent and sophisticated yet mysterious and captivating. He leads a glamorous lifestyle of wild parties and loud music in a mansion, all to woo Daisy back into his life, with whom he had fallen madly in love years earlier. This love for Daisy became his obsession.Gatsby, we learn, is a very lonely man because even though numerous people attend his parties, none of them truly know who he is. This loneliness and obsession with the past keep him from having a true grasp on reality.
Jordan Baker
Daisy’s friend who is an athlete. She does not fit the mold for the typical woman of 1920’s America. She is an unmarried professional golfer who dates the narrator, Nick. She is depicted as attractive yet harsh.She represents the harsh view on the changing role of females in society at this time. Women were seeking individuality and equality and this went against the traditional view of women as the property of their husbands. Jordan is accused of being a cheater at golf and seems to demonstrate unethical behavior throughout the story. Her immoral behavior demonstrates society's negative opinion of women of this type.
Myrtle Wilson
The wife of George Wilson and the mistress of Tom Buchanan. She is fleshy and sensual. Myrtle lives in the filthy rundown area of the Valley of Ashes, which divides West Egg from New York City. She is depicted as a vulgar and classless social climber who will do anything to escape her miserable and unsatisfying life of poverty and social shame.
George Wilson
A gas station and garage owner living in the 'valley of ashes' between Eggs and New York City. He is spiritless and weak. Wilson is a man defeated by his circumstances. He's poor and beaten down. George Wilson is a reminder to the readers of the realities of the common man struggling with poverty and the inherent consequences of an unprivileged life.
Meyer Wolfsheim
A disconcerting older man who makes Nick Carraway uneasy. He wears cuff links made from human molars and through Gatsby we learn that he is a gambler. He is fixed the World's Series back in 1919.
Mr. McKee
A pale and feminine man who is married to Mrs. McKee. He is a photographer who is seen at a party trying to get Tom to invest in his business.
Mrs. McKee
A “shrill, languid woman yet handsome and horrible”. Always trying to get her husband to photograph something that he may enjoy.

A kind person.
