Synopsis: Allegorical tale concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud and erecting a wall between their houses. The fathers then hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa. After the children discover the deception, and reject the arranged love match, each goes off to experience the world beyond. They later return home bruised but enlightened. Realizing they have always been in love, they renew their vows with more maturity. All ethnicities please apply. Actors should be very familiar with the music, have strong improvisational skills and move well. EL GALLO: (30-45ish) Baritone. Strong actor/singer. Narrator, swashbuckling story teller. He should be a rather exotic looking: dashing, suave cavalier con man. His commanding presence wreaks of mystery and weaves magic on the stage and on the other characters. A Modern day charlatan...or is he? (Think George Chakiris/Brian Stokes Mitchell.) Must move well. Stage combat a plus but not necessary. THE GIRL (LUISA) mid 20’s (able to play 16) Legit Lyric Soprano. Engenue Strong singer/actor/moves well, (some ballet/dance required).. When first seen she is a naive incurably romantic young girl who is in love with love. Fantasizes about life, the world. Unable to deal with reality. Disillusioned with reality, she is easily swept off of her feet by El Gallo. No longer seeing the world through rose colored glasses, she returns home and finds true love. THE BOY (MATT) (20-25ish) Lyric Baritone, young leading man type. Strong actor/singer/moves well. Awkward, rather shy, good looking nerdy type. Head buried in books, inexperienced in the ways of the world and women. Falls for the girl next door (how convenient). When spurned he takes his broken heart out into the world and is kicked around, but like the prodigal son, returns home a man (some stage combat a plus) THE BOY’S FATHER (HUCKLEBEE) (40 -50) Character actor (comedic song and dance man) A retired Navy man. Plagued with gout. Cantankerous middle-aged retired soldier. He likes order, discipline. Frustrated with his son who he thinks is a fool. Probably divorced and still bitter towards women. Hard on his son, feels he is too much like his ex-wife. (Must be able to do harmony) THE GIRL’S FATHER (BELLOMY) (40 - 50) Character actor (comedic song and dance man) A small businessman, tight with his money. He shelters and is over-protective of his daughter. Suffers with asthma, (probably allergic to some of his plants). A widower, who has raised his daughter without a woman’s touch and is unable to have real talks or in depth conversations with her about her mother or becoming a woman. (Must be able to do harmony) THE OLD ACTOR (HENRY) (60 plus) An ‘ancient’ classical actor who is desperate to work on the stage again, he will take any job. So down on his luck, he lives in and out of a trunk. No matter how grandiose he is in his delivery, it is obvious to everyone but him that he is unable to remember lines. THE MAN WHO DIES (MORTIMER) (30ish) Comedic character type. He is Henry’s side-kick. He is dressed as an Indian, (why, only the author knows for sure). A bit player, who will do anything to get a bigger part. THE MUTE: Must move well. Dance or gymnastics not required but a plus. Not Coy or ellfin. His/Her function is essentially to function. He hands out, removes and provides props--swiftly. Strong improvisational skills a must, as opposed to mime. Ability to anticipate the actors’ wants and needs He is on stage all the time; seen but not seen. Though a non-speaking part, this is a very important role in the show.
