Edgar Allan Poe's classic horror short story is an examination of physical and psychological decay, a paranoid descent into madness which creeps into everything and everyone around. Roderick Usher has closed himself off from the world, shutting himself and his frail twin sister Madeline into their decaying family manor. But now Madeline is dying of an unexplained illness, and the ghosts of the house begin weaving themselves into Roderick's tattered psyche. Frantic, Roderick has invited his only childhood friend, Ed Allen, to visit him and Madeline in Madeline's final days. But as Ed attempts to comfort his friend, the madness of the house begins to work its way into Ed as well.

Seeking:

Roderick Usher:

30s to early 40s. Shattered and desperate, a man who alternately fights against insanity and longs to surrender to it.

Madeline Usher:

30s to early 40s. Roderick's twin sister. Frailty and illness have lent her an unearthly beauty and serenity, which is overshadowed by her fear of death.

Ed Allen:

30s to early 40s. Roderick's childhood friend. A successful, pragmatic family man who is frightened by what he perceives in the Usher house.

Dr. Dumas:

30s to 60s. The family physician of the Ushers, overbearing but fearful of revealing his secrets.

Jerome:

40s to 60s. Roderick and Madeline's father. A ghost or hallucination. Note: This is a non-speaking role.

Constance:

40s to 60s. Roderick and Madeline's mother. A ghost or hallucination. By turns berating and gentle.

Manfredo:

50s to 70s. Roderick and Madeline's grandfather. A ghost or hallucination. Sadistic and gleeful.

Mr. Allen:

40s to 60s. Ed's father. A ghost or hallucination.

Mrs. Allen:

40s to 60s. Ed's mother. A ghost or hallucination.
