SEEKING SUBMISSIONS FOR:

Emma:

(daughter) As written, the character is supposed to be 13 years old (though the actress can certainly be older) Smart, resourceful, active, driven young teenager. She is action oriented, wants to get out of rural, inland Southern California. Wild and impulsive with imaginative dreams. She aspires to independence and adventure. Sassy, tough minded, can hold her own with teenage attitude. Strong temperament resisting encroachments of family, with some tomboy attributes. Loves to ride horseback and not afraid of guns.

Wesley:

(son) 18 year old bears the family weight by trying to hold the group together. Rooted to the land and trying to keep the farm going and be the man of the house while grappling with father. Observant farm boy, knows how to repair things and tend to animals. Emulates but is afraid of dad. Must be able to do long tour de force monologue with truth and variety. Handy around the house and farm. Imaginative and observant. All his senses are alive and visceral. Alternates between being jealous and tender with his sister. Lives with tension and fear of father's explosive nature. Hyper sensitive and in his body.

Ella:

(mother) 40 to 55. Married to alcoholic veteran. Aware of social status. Has some sense of propriety but struggles in the face of his wildness. Ineffectual at protecting children but tries. Has toughened up and reached breaking point. Longs for something more, i.e., Europe but has no clue as to what it is--willing to reshape her life for a pipedream. Impractical about the future. Very angry at her husband and trying to resist his persuasion. Wants to find a new lease on life by selling the farm. A coiled up dynamo who sometimes wears white gloves when she goes out.

Weston:

(father) 40 to 60. Alcoholic who can be a total raging drunk one moment and then a charming, reformed, cleaned up man the next. WWII fighter pilot veteran. Best days in his life were during the war but he has never readjusted to civilian life. Has violent bouts of anger. A gambler who is an easy dupe to snake oil salesmen; buys barren, worthless land. Often a solitary loner. Would be called white trash now. Ideally he is big, burly and dangerous; capable of knocking a door down. Has dream of having the perfect American farm. A shrewd, seductive charmer. Gritty, wild sense of humor and a consummate storyteller. Incorrigible and yet oddly irresistible. Has caused a lot of family damage and up till now got away with it.
