EPIC produces on a scaffolded rehearsal schedule to accommodate for our community's other jobs, programs and priorities they have worked to secure. Not all actors will be called at every rehearsal, or for the whole rehearsal block.

SEEKING

Christopher (Christopher John Francis Boone): Christopher is a 15 year old Autistic young man who possesses a brilliant mind for math and logic, but who struggles with social cues and sensory overload. Christopher thinks literally and speaks very directly; he does not like metaphors and vagueness. He does not like to be touched. He lives with his father, Ed, in Swindon, England. After finding Wellington, a neighbor's dog, pierced with a garden fork, he sets out to find the killer, investigating in the manner of Sherlock Holmes, whom he admires. In the course of his investigation, Christopher stumbles onto another mystery: his mother Judy is alive and living in London with her lover, although according to Christopher's father, she died two years before. This discovery leads to a fierce confrontation between Christopher and his father, and his father admits to having killed Wellington. In fear of his father, Christopher braves the unknown world (trains, London, subways, and strangers) in an effort to find his mother. In the process, Christopher becomes more confident, and determined to get what he wants - which at the time of this play, is the opportunity to take an advanced Math Exam, called an A-level. His primary support person and confidant throughout his journey is his teacher, Siobahn.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: 18+ to play 15

Siobahn: Siobahn is Christopher's teacher. Out of all the adults in Christopher's life, Siobhan is the most understanding of Christopher's particular needs and strengths. She sees him as a human being - a teenager who is growing into himself, while dealing with a difficult family situation (the loss of his mother, the anger of his father). She respects Christopher's intelligence, and encourages him to accomplish things he knows he is capable of (like advanced math) and things which are new (like writing a book, and putting on a play). She provides him with tools he can use when he is feeling lost or overwhelmed; Christopher often hears her voice in his head when he is in a difficult situation. As a result, she is one of the few people whom Christopher trusts. During the play, she acts as both a narrator (reading from Christopher's book), and as someone who directly engages with Christopher or another character (acting out a scene from Christopher's life).

Gender: Female identifying; Age: probably between 30 and 50

Ed (Ed Boone): Ed is Christopher's father. He is a plumber, who runs his own small business. He has been caring for Christopher by himself since his wife left him two years before the events of the play. Ordinarily, Ed treats Christopher lovingly; he is protective of Christopher, and advocates for him (e.g., by insisting that Christopher should be allowed to take his A-level math test). But Ed also has a temper, and when frustrated or angry, can act aggressively - even violently - towards Christopher and others. Ed is extremely angry at his wife, Judy, for leaving them. As a result, he has told Christopher that his mother has died, and has hidden the letters she has written him. Christopher's discovery that his father has lied about his mother, and Ed's consequent admission that he was the one who killed the neighbor's dog, destroys Christopher's trust in Ed. From that point onward, Ed does whatever he can to try to repair his relationship with Christopher, which Ed describes as more important than anything else.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: probably around 40

Judy (Judy Boone): Judy is Christopher's mother. Two years before the events of the play, she left Christopher and his father to move to London with her lover, Roger, who had been their next door neighbor. As she tells Christopher in a letter, she was not a very good mother. She would often say how she dreamed of a different life, living in France, being married to someone else. She would become frustrated with Christopher's behavior, particularly in public, and would get upset or angry. Judy would vent her frustrations to Ed, her husband, who called her selfish. This resulted in arguments, and eventually, led to Judy feeling very lonely and turning to Roger. Nevertheless, Judy loves Christopher, and after moving to London, she writes to him regularly. Christopher's unexpected appearance on her doorstep ultimately leads to Judy's decision to leave Roger, and start a new life with Christopher.

Gender: Female identifying; Age: probably around 40

Roger (Roger Shears): Roger is Judy's lover. Before he moved to London with Judy, he was her next-door neighbor. He was (and may still be) married to Mrs. Shears, the owner of Wellington, the dog who has been killed. Roger is often uncaring or unkind, to Judy - and then to Christopher, and to Ed. He seems to care more about appearances than reality. For example, he wants to be seen as giving and supportive, so he gives Christopher some books that are meant for young children; he then responds with sarcasm when Christopher points that out. He can get very drunk, and when drunk, becomes even nastier.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: probably around 40

Station Policeman: The Station Policeman is assigned to patrol the Swindon train station. Swindon is where Christopher lives with his father, but Christopher has never been to the train station before he sets off on his journey to London to find his mother. The Policeman tries to help Christopher, but is taken aback by the way Christopher acts and talks. The Policeman doesn't know what to make of Christopher. He is not sure whether Christopher is deliberately being uncooperative, or whether he is clueless. The Policeman becomes increasingly frustrated with Christopher, and is rude to him, calling him a little monkey and a bloody handful. At the same time, he is trying to do his job, and get Christopher back to his father.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: probably in his 30s, but flexible

ENSEMBLE

NOTE: The Ensemble plays a critical role in the play. Each ensemble member plays at least one specified character, usually more. In addition, the ensemble helps to create the different environments that Christopher experiences, both physically and by embodying different Voices. For an example of this, see section 32 in the script, pages 41-44, entitled Swindon Train Station.

There are 8 actors in the ensemble. The primary character played by each ensemble member is listed and described below. If you want to audition for one of these characters, each has an audition monologue.

Mrs. Alexander: Mrs. Alexander is one of Christopher's neighbors. She is an elderly woman. Of all the neighbors Christopher encounters, Mrs. Alexander is the kindest, and the one who seems to recognize and appreciate Christopher for who he is. She is also the one who spills the beans, and tells Christopher that his mother was having an affair with her neighbor, Mr. Shears, whose wife owned the dog that was murdered.

Gender: Female identifying; Age: probably over 60

Mrs. Shears: Mrs. Shears is Christopher's next door neighbor, who owned Wellington, the dog that was murdered. Two years ago, Mrs. Shears's husband Roger left her and moved to London with Christopher's mother. Mrs. Shears is extremely angry about that - both with Roger and with Judy, Christopher's mother. For a time after her husband left her, Mrs. Shears became very friendly with Christopher's father, but that ended in an unpleasant argument.

Gender: Female identifying; Age: probably around 40

NOTE: If auditioning for Mrs. Shears, you should perform her audition monologue, and also perform the monologue for the London Train Station Information Person.

Mrs. Gascoyne: Mrs. Gascoyne is the Principal of Christopher's school. She respects Christopher's intelligence, but is reluctant to let him take his A-level examination in Math early, because it would mean treating him differently from other students in the school. Eventually, she relents, and is supportive of Christopher achieving all he can, at his own pace.

Gender: Any gender; Age: 50s

Punk Girl: Punk Girl is a young woman, who embraces counter-culture defiance. Nevertheless, she is kind-hearted and caring, especially towards kids. She can be direct (and even rude). She encounters Christopher while she is waiting on the tube (subway) platform in London; Christopher has gone down onto the tracks, and Punk Girl helps to save him.

Gender: Female identifying; Age: young 20s

Duty Sergeant: The Duty Sergeant is assigned to process new arrests at the Swindon police station, including Christopher. The Duty Sergeant tries to act professionally and respectfully, but is surprised and thrown off his routine by the way Christopher answers his questions, and by Christopher's behavior. Nevertheless, the Duty Sergeant never loses his cool.

Gender: Written as male identifying, but could be any gender; Age: probably in his 50s

Policeman One: Policeman One is called to the scene when Christopher's neighbor Mrs. Shears find Christopher in her garden in the middle of the night, standing beside Wellington, her murdered dog. Policeman One is a down to earth bloke (fellow). He is superficially respectful, but can easily tip towards being disrespectful - infantilizing towards children, and rude toward anyone who appears to challenge his authority.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: probably in his 30s

Man with Socks: Man with Socks is a down-to-earth bloke (fellow), who encounters Christopher while he is waiting on the tube (subway) platform in London; Christopher has gone down onto the tracks, and Man with Socks is concerned, but reluctant to get involved. At Punk Girl's prodding, Man with Socks goes onto the tracks and helps Christopher up. Man with Socks is then indignant that his efforts aren't being applauded.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: probably in his 30s or 40s

Reverend Peters: Reverend Peters is associated with the school that Christopher attends. He treats Christopher with respect, and takes Christopher's questions and comments seriously, even when they surprise him. Christopher consults Reverend Peters about matters concerning God and the universe. Reverend Peters is the person called on to monitor exams, because he is unquestionably trustworthy.

Gender: Male identifying; Age: probably in his 50s-60s
