Breakdown

THE COLOR PURPLE

SEEKING:

  • Celie: This role has been cast. (African American, 20s-30s). Vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but really not, has a deep, hard soul. Believes that she is ugly, has a sense of humor which is sometimes wicked. Needs a great belt singing voice with a lot of soul.
  • Shug/Ensemble: This role has been cast. (African American, 20s-30s) Alto. A popular singer, we meet her at death's door. Attractive, confident, dynamic, powerful, irresistible, but has a frailty, like a wounded animal. Needs a knockout, Bessie Smith-style, bluesy singing voice.
  • Mister/Ensemble: This role has been cast. (African American, 20s-30s) Baritone/Bass. Handsome, big, masculine, strong presence, dominating, capable of brutal behavior but also a victim in his own way. Gets his power for free. Married to Celie, he abuses her. He is in love with Shug. Needs a great singing voice.
  • Sofia/Ensemble: (African American, 20s-30s): Alto. Physically bigger but beautiful. Comfortable being large, great sense of humor, touching, vulnerable. Married to Harpo, she does not let anyone mistreat her. Needs comic chops. Needs a soulful, belting voice.
  • Harpo/Ensemble: (African American, 20s-30s): Mister's confused, good-hearted son. Represents the new generation, he strives to be seen as a man by both his father and his wife. He marries the independent Sofia.
  • Nettie/Ensemble: (African American, 20s-30s): Celie's younger sister. Attractive, adventuresome, feisty spirit, maternal, educated and knowledgeable. She has a powerful bond with Celie. Forced by Mister to leave Celie, she starts a new life in Africa. Strong belt.
  • Squeak/Ensemble: (African American, 20s): Harpo's lover after Sofia leaves him. Although she is mistreated, she eventually undergoes a transformation. Attractive, sassy, fiery, strong-willed, unafraid to take anybody on. Belt and soprano capability.
  • Ensemble: Males and females of all ages, African American. Strong singing voices, strong movers, and dynamic personalities to play various roles including Church ladies, Preacher, Prison Guard, etc.

THE COLORED MUSEUM

SEEKING:

  • 2 men, and 3 women: Multiple roles. All are Black. The piece is ensemble-driven, fast-moving, and demands comedic precision and emotional depth:
