Equity actors for roles and understudies in THE COAST STARLIGHT (see breakdown).

All roles will be understudied.

One day, six strangers board the Coast Starlight, the long-distance train that runs from Los Angeles to Seattle. They’re each reckoning with the questionable choices and wrong turns that set them on this particular journey. Although their literal trip is mostly solitary and silent, in their imaginations, they flirt and fight and fall in love with each other, and they try their best to help each other figure out the right path forward. Keith Bunin’s new play is a smart, funny and compassionate story about our capacity for invention and re-invention when life goes off the rails.

Note: Adherence to all applicable New York State, New York City, and CDC public health and safety guidelines will be required of all employees. Actors must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 to be considered for an offer of employment.

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Prepare a brief, contemporary monologue no longer than 1 minute in length. Your audition should be filmed in front of a clean background, with no backlighting, limiting ambient noise. If using an iPhone, the video should be shot in horizontal NOT vertical format and sent in a non-downloadable format (unlisted YouTube link or Vimeo).

T.J. – Male identifying. Early 20s. Any ethnicity. Working-class, from the country, not the city. Likely Southern or Midwestern. Friendly, fit, thoughtful, slightly formal but warm, always looking for a way to be helpful. He’s a Navy medic who’s used to playing by the rules. Naturally guileless, the secret he’s trying to keep is weighing on his psyche, but he’s never self-pitying or self-dramatizing. He doesn’t want to burden anyone else with his problem, but his open-heartedness and quiet vulnerability make people instinctively want to connect to him and help him.

JANE - Female identifying. Early to Mid-20s. Any ethnicity. Talkative, curious, inquisitive, extremely emotionally available, and immediately appealing. She came to America as a baby with her parents, both of them mathematics professors. She’s a visual artist and a natural, comfortable observer. She doesn’t know what her life is going to look like yet. She is smart and driven, which doesn’t overshadow her coltish youthfulness. She’s a total romantic. She is the type of person who draws your eye, even when she isn’t doing anything.

NOAH - Male identifying. 30s-40s. Any ethnicity. Working-class, scruffy, a military veteran, well-built, athletic. He is not always sociable, and he definitely can have a temper, but despite his size and strength, he’s never scary. He’s endlessly curious. He came from nothing, and any opportunity he’s had in life, he’s created for himself. He has an easy-going sexuality, and he has a blithe disregard for any rules or structures that he hasn’t created for himself.

LIZ – Female identifying. 30s-40s. Any ethnicity. Working class, from Florida. Brash, emotionally voluble, opinionated, unapologetically sexual, and loud, but incisive and deeply philosophical. Totally self-taught. You underestimate her at your own peril. She’s cutting and sardonic and very funny. She has no social embarrassment, very few boundaries, and great depth of feeling.

ED – Male identifying. 40s. Any ethnicity. A traveling businessman, he is cynical, self-deprecating, weary, sarcastic, easily annoyed, and rumpled. He was born middle class and he’s hanging on to it by a thread. He loves his children deeply but doesn’t see them very often, which just about kills him. He doesn’t take very good care of himself, in body or mind. He has a propensity toward alcohol abuse: most likely he’s self-medicating his depression. He has a genuinely good heart, and at his core he is funny and kind, and actively looking for a way out of his despair.

ANNA – Female identifying or Non-Binary. 40s-50s. Any ethnicity. Comfortable middle/upper-middle class. Soft-spoken, observant, tender, slightly reserved, gently ironic, and utterly sensible. Naturally strong and resilient, and deeply compassionate. Anna's taking the train home to her/their wife and kids after traveling to San Francisco to identify her/their dead brother’s body. Anna’s grief is deep and raw, but there is no moroseness or depression about her/them: everything is extremely vivid and alive to her/them in this moment, and she/they are thoughtful and perceptive even at her/their lowest. Her/Their years as an educator and a parent have deepened her/their innate ability to analytically but empathetically reason her/their way through any crisis she/they or anyone close to her/them might be facing.
