BREAKDOWN

THE ANNUNCIATION

SYNOPSIS: Gabi returns home to Texas to help her mother care for her dying grandmother. As María hovers on the threshold of life, experiencing ecstatic visions of demons and angels from her hospital bed, Gabi balances on a threshold of her own. With startling clarity and sly wit, The Annunciation traces three generations of Mexican-American women to confront the overlapping crises of morals and faith at the heart of the nation today, inviting us to consider our personal and political identities — and to ask how they might be reimagined.

SEEKING:

RAFAEL — He/him. 30s-40s. Often asked if he's Latino. Perhaps in a different time he'd be called ethnically ambiguous. Romantic and sincere, with insecurities leading to resentment and anger. A nice-ish Nice Guy with grounded casual charm. Less confident than his appearance suggests, somewhat frightened of both women and confrontation, which makes him dangerous.

NIÑA — She/her. 12+ to play younger. Latina. Forced to grow up too soon, but faces it bravely. PROFICIENCY IN SPANISH A PLUS.

THE BELOW ROLES ARE CAST:

LOLA (CAST) — She/her. 55-65. Mexican American. Garrulous, brilliant, impulsive, warm, protective, unabashed, oversharing. Raw nerves from a traumatic childhood and a strong sense of justice. Tired and tender from fighting for what's right all her life, but will never stop. SPEAKS SPANISH FLUENTLY.

GABI (CAST) — She/her. 33. Mexican American. Gabi has a prickly shell and is constantly wounded that others won't work harder to gain her trust. A truth-teller whose lack of tact makes her regret much of what she does and says. Lonely and self-hating, but compassionate towards others and observant. Feeling trapped within her life, she romanticizes impulsive overcorrections. PROFICIENCY IN SPANISH A PLUS.

MARIA (CAST) — She/her. 75-90. Mexican American. Fluent in Spanish. A passionate and fearful Christian, her faith is both her greatest solace and greatest torment. Weakened and wary from a lifetime of coping with schizophrenia and institutionalization, she worships her daughter and granddaughter but also feels tacitly wounded by their distance and dismissiveness. Sly and observant. SPEAKS SPANISH FLUENTLY.
