BREAKDOWN

TERRA FIRMA will run in the 199 seat Rose Nagelberg Theater at Baruch College in Manhattan. TERRA FIRMA is the inaugural production of the COOP, a new off-broadway company- founded by Andrus Nichols and Kate Hamill. The COOP was conceived out of the desire to create a community of NYC-based artists who are interested in making extraordinary theatre and committed to fostering a culture of collaboration, experimentation, and trust. We produce both new plays that resonate with timeless themes and universal truths, and old plays reinvigorated through a new lens.

TERRA FIRMA is set in a not-so-distant Beckettian future, years after a conflict known as The Big War, where a tiny kingdom wrestles with the problems of running a nation, and spars with different concepts of what makes a citizen, a country and a civilization. The play is inspired by a real life event and its aftermath: In the 1960’s a retired WWII army major in the United Kingdom claimed an abandoned aircraft platform in international waters off the coast of Essex as his own sovereign nation, planted his flag, and invented a motto, E Mare Libertas! 'From the Sea, Freedom!

TERRA FIRMA was originally a commission for the Royal Court Theatre, the premiere venue for new writing in the UK.

ROY, male identifying, early 50’s, any ethnicity, founder of the micro-nation of Terra Firma and its de facto King. He fiercely defends his realm, and family from all intruders. Though he may be the king, he defers to his wife, THE QUEEN, in all matters of state. He is independent, loyal, but years on terra firma have made him rough around the edges. (CAST)

QUEEN, female identifying, 40’s, any ethnicity. Roy’s beloved wife. Head of State. (CAST)

JONES, male identifying, 50’s, any ethnicity. Jones is the one citizen of Terra Firma, the head of Homeland Security, its general munitions expert, and Roy’s best mate. Both Jones and Roy are veterans of the Big War. Roy is a bit of a loner and secretive, but he is a Terra Firma True Believer. (CAST)

HOSTAGE, male identifying, 30’s-60’s, white, a fisherman of unknown origin and a foreign intruder in Terra Firma waters. He may be a threat, or he may just be a fisherman. (CAST)

TEDDY, male identifying, 17, any ethnicity, the royal couple’s teenage son and Prince Regent to the crown. He has ventured out into the world. He worries about the future, and what will become of Terra Firma and its people. He has been trained by Roy and Jones in all of the skills becoming a Crown Prince of Terra Firma: rope climbing, tactical maneuvers and general survival tactics. (CAST)

DIPLOMAT, male identifying, 50’s-60’s, any ethnicity, is the self-appointed negotiator for the Hostage’s release. He represents those things on the other side of the horizon should they exist. The diplomat is vaguely continental, but definitely hungry. An amateur boxer in his youth. Both his ancient and recent history are murky. (CAST)
