BREAKDOWN
SISTAS is the story of African American women told through popular music, from “God Bless’ the Child” to Destiny's Child. After a matriarch’s death, the women in the family clean Grandma’s attic and find love and old memories packed away, and in the process sing hit tunes that trace the history of black women, from the trials of the 1930s through the girl groups of the 60s to the empowerment of the 90s. This soulful and laugh-out-loud show goes from pain to pride to power, from “Oh, Happy Day” to “Mama Said”, from “I Will Survive” to “Tyrone” from “I am Not My Hair” to “A Woman’s Worth.” From Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday to Beyoncé, and from Ma Rainey to Mary J. Blige.

SEEKING:
The cast is comprised of five female characters -- characters are four African-American women and one Caucasian woman. Seeking future replacements.
All must be excellent singers in the pop, jazz and R & B styles.

Dr. Simone: African-American. Late 30’s - 40's, divorced mother of 17 year-old Tamika. Simone got her doctorate from Harvard in African-American music and is a professor. She has the demeanor of an educated person, and sometimes gets a little know-it-all. Mezzo soprano
Tamika: African-American woman about to graduate from high school. She looks 18 and has the feel of the street.. Daughter of Simone. Soprano with belt.
Roberta: African-American woman, late 30s-40s, who is strong and full of anger, some of it later revealed to be a result of a childhood trauma. Alto.
Heather: Caucasian woman. Simone’s sister-in-law and therefore one of the Sistas. She's worked very hard to be accepted into the family. She is 30's-40's and is spunky and full of life. She is a social worker. Belter.
