Director Eric Schaeffer

1st reh: October 25, 2011 Runs: November 28, 2011-January 15, 2012.

Tracy Turnblad: early 20s. Pop Belt. Short and of heavy physical stature. Always optimistic and highly energetic. All she wants is to be a dancer on the Corny Collins’ show. Very strong pop belt and strong dance.

Penny Pingleton: early 20s. Belt. Tracy’s best friend. Plain girl who quickly transforms into a vibrant woman. Not the brightest bulb, but completely loyal to her friend Tracy. Strong belt and strong mover.

Link Larkin: early 20s. Pop Tenor. All-American boy. A heart throb and Tracy’s dream boyfriend. Perhaps everyone’s dream boyfriend. Strong pop vocals and strong dance.

Edna Turnblad: 40-50s. Tracy’s mother. Loving middleclass mother of “size”. This role is played by a male but should not be camp. Her sensibilities are stuck in the 50’s decade and she is not ready to move into the 60’s. Constantly concerned for Tracy’s well being. Good vocals and good movement ability.

Motormouth Maybelle: 40-50s. Baltimore’s Queen of Soul. Bold and brassy. African-American. Strong gospel/pop and good mover.

Corny Collins: 30s. Pop Tenor. A handsome 1960’s TV host. Kids look up to him. Strong pop vocals and good mover.

Seaweed J. Stubbs: early 20s. Pop Tenor. African-American high school boy. Penny’s love interest. Very strong pop/soul vocals and strong dancer.

Amber Von Tussle: early 20s. Pop Belt. A princess. Very attractive and knows it. Oblivious to the world around her and a snob. Strong pop belt and strong mover.

Velma Von Tussle: 40-50s. Former beauty queen and Amber’s mother. Stylish in an over the top way. Snobby and racist. Manipulative; she always gets what she wants. Strong character vocals and good mover.

Wilbur: Late 40s – 50s. Loving but unassuming father to Tracy. A quirky man with an almost a child like innocence. Is an inventor and owns a joke shop. Good vocals and character actor.

Little Inez: Late teens to play younger. African-American. Little sister to Seaweed. Very quick and street smart. Very strong pop and strong mover.

Female Authority Figure: 40-50s. To play a variety of characters. Versatile character actress with strong comedic timing. Roles include Prudy Pingleton, Penny’s overprotective and closed-minded mother; Prison Matron; and Gym Teacher.

Male Authority Figure: 40-50. To play a variety of characters. Versatile character actor with strong comedic timing. Roles include Mr. Pinky, owner of the Hefty Hideaway; Mr. Spritzer, President of Ultra Clutch hairspray; and the Principal of Tracy’s high school.

Ensemble: Late teens – 20s. High school “look.” A mix of African-American and Caucasian. Must have very strong pop belt and strong dance.

BROTHER RUSSIA

Music by Dana Rowe; Lyrics & Book by John Dempsey

Director Eric Schaeffer

1st reh: February 6, 2012. Runs March 5- April 8, 2012.

Brother Russia: allegedly 142 years old, but he only looks about half that. Non-singing role, but a general sense of rhythm and musicality appreciated. Brother Russia is the narrator, a former classical actor whose massively over-the-top style of oration has long fallen out of favor. Slightly off his rocker, wildly eccentric. He needs to be a great storyteller, with a hugely expressive, overripe voice.

Sasha/Grigori: early 20s to early 30s. Rock tenor with a high A. Sasha, the stage manager of the troupe, is conscripted into playing "Grigori", the anti-hero of the play within the play. A very handsome, idealized and dashing (if dark) leading man. Rock star energy.

Sophie/Anastasia: early to mid 20s. Pop belt soprano, with good low range. Sophie is a runaway from a Romany gypsy caravan who has only recently joined Brother Russia's theatre company. She is a wounded, battered soul and possibly a prostitute. She is cast (massively against type) to play the virginal "Grand Duchess Anastasia", also a wounded soul. Plucky, willful and stronger than she knows.

Viktor/Nicholas: 40s-50s. Strong baritone. Viktor is the company manager, and a great, pragmatic bully of a man. A modern day Stromboli. He is cast as "Tsar Nicholas Romanov II" and should inspire fear in both guises.

Lubov/Alexandra: 40s-50s. Dark Pop Alto/Mezzo with a strong low G. Lubov fancies herself one of the great leading ladies of the Eastern European stage. She is devoted to her craft and delusional about her level of fame. She plays the "Alexandra", devoted wife to the Tsar, mother to Alexei and Anastasia.

Anton/Dimitri: 40s-50s. Pop Baritone. Anton is Lubov's husband, a poor man's Lunt to her second-rate Fontaine. Very proper and professional. He plays the much put-upon "Dimitri", confidant to the Tsar and commander of the armed forces. A grasp of vaudeville would be a plus.

Natalia/Zoya: 30s. Pop Belt Mezzo. Natalia is a curvaceous mezzo with delusions of soprano-hood. She is lusty and spirited. She plays "Zoya", a seen-it-all barmaid.

Mikhail/Father Gapon: 30s. Pop Baritone/Tenor. Mikhail is a squirrelly, bespectacled puppeteer who works the many Bunraku-style puppets in the show. He also plays "Father Gapon" a Ukrainian priest with an unlikely "Woodstock"-ish, rock-edged voice.

Ulla/Witch: 20s. Pop Belt Mezzo-Soprano. Ulla is a former stripper from Vladivostok, tough as sheet metal. She plays a very sexy "Witch" who lives in the woods and seduces/rapes the young hero early on. Sensual, but a little scary with a powerful and soulful voice.

Sergei/Felix: 20s. Pop Tenor. Sergei is a free spirit. A life in the theatre has allowed him to avoid both his family and all sense of responsibility. He plays "Prince Felix Yusupov", a flamboyant, cross-dressing nobleman with a taste for the decadent life.

Bella/Dominika: 20s. Pop Belt Soprano. Bella, Ulla's second cousin by common law marriage, is the youngest girl in the company and has yet to play a lead. Tonight shall be no exception. She ends up playing Anastasia's handmaiden, "Dominika".

Clio/Kira: 20s. Pop Soprano. Olivia Newton-John look alike; strong pop vocals with great comedic timing. Must roller skate. Beautiful blonde daughter of Zeus and muse to Sonny.

Sonny Malone: 20s. Pop Bari-Tenor. A 1980s struggling artist. Youthful naïveté, handsome and charming. strong pop vocals with great comedic timing. Must roller skate.

Danny Maguire/Zeus: late 50s-early 60s. Baritone. Mature leading actor with good voice and dance skills.

Calliope/Aphrodite: 30-50. Rock-pop Belt to an E flat. Female Greek mythical character and older sister to Clio. Comedic character actress.

Melpomene/Medusa: 30-50. Female Greek mythical character and sister to Clio. Outrageously funny character.

Thalia/Siren/80’s Singer/Cyclops: 20s. Tenor. Male Greek mythical character and others. Great dancer, singer and comedic actor, who can also skate. Must be able to hold own in tight, rock ‘n roll, 80s harmony.

Euterpe/Siren/40’s Singer/Thetis: 20s. Soprano. Female Greek mythical character and others. Great dancer, singer and comedic actor, who can also skate. Must be able to hold own in tight, rock ‘n roll, 80s harmony.

Erato/ Siren/40’s Singer/Hera: 20s. Alto. Female Greek mythical character and others. Great dancer, singer and comedic actor, who can also skate. Must be able to hold own in tight, rock ‘n roll, 80s harmony.

Terpsichore/Siren/Hermes/Centaur: 20s. Tenor. Male Greek mythical character and others. Great dancer, singer and comedic actor, who can also skate. Must be able to hold own in tight, rock ‘n roll, 80s harmony.
