BREAKDOWN

Please note the roles of Magnolia Hawks and Gaylord Ravenal have already been cast.

Julie La Verne:
Female. The original lead actress of the Cotton Blossom and wife of Steve Baker. She is secretly mixed-race (African-American and Caucasian), but passes as white until Pete reveals the truth, prompting the couple to flee. After Steve abandons her, she almost becomes a celebrated lounge singer, but gives up her chance at fame to help Magnolia. (Late 20’s-30’s; Ethnically Ambiguous; Mezzo-soprano).

Queenie:
Female. The Cotton Blossom’s cook and Joe’s wife. She is a tough, no-nonsense person who cares for the younger women on the boat, particularly Magnolia and Julie. (30’s-40’s; African-American; Mezzo-soprano).

Parthenia Ann “Parthy” Hawks:
Female. The business manager of the Cotton Blossom and Cap’n Andy’s wife. Unlike her fun-loving husband, Parthenia Ann is strict and even shrewish. She is also extremely protective of Magnolia. (40’s-50’s; Caucasian; Mezzo-soprano).

Ellie Schultz:
Female. One of the actresses on the Cotton Blossom and Frank’s wife. When she and her husband discover that Magnolia is struggling, they work together to help her find a job. Must be an excellent dancer with great comedic skills. (20’s-30’s; Caucasian; Mezzo-soprano).

Cap’n Andy Hawks:
Male. The boisterous, fun-loving captain of the Cotton Blossom. Cap’n Hawks is a skilled showman, able to think on his feet and attract customers to his shows. Though fun and freewheeling (especially compared to his strict wife Parthenia), he does genuinely care for his employees and tries his best to help them. (Late 30’s-40’s; Caucasian; Baritone/Tenor II; could be spoke-sung).

Joe:
Male. A dockhand on the Cotton Blossom. Joe has a world-weary attitude, and prefers to watch life from the sidelines making observations and dispensing advice rather than getting involved in troubles (much to the exasperation of his wife, Queenie). (30’s-40’s; African-American; Bass).

Steve Baker:
Male. The original leading man on the Cotton Blossom and husband of Julie La Verne. Steve deeply loves his wife, and becomes furious when Pete makes a pass at her. He chooses to risk his career and safety by staying with Julie despite her being mixed-race, but abandons her at some point. (Late 20’s-30’s; Caucasian; Baritone).

Frank Schulz:
Male. One of the actors on the Cotton Blossom; he is happily married to Ellie. After finding success in vaudeville, he and Ellie help a destitute Magnolia find a job. Must be an excellent dancer with great comedic skills. (20’s-30’s; Caucasian; Tenor).

ENSEMBLE:
All must be excellent singers and dancers. Featured roles from the Ensemble may include: Pete, Windy McClain, Sheriff Vallon, Older Kim Ravenal-Hawks, Mrs. O’Brien, and Jim (20’s-60’s; all ethnicities).
