| Breakdown
This romantic story (made familiar to us all in the 1998 film You've Got Mail) is set in a 1930s parfumerie in Budapest. Salesman Georg takes solace in reading his latest letter from a pen pal he's never seen or met. His lovely daydreams are interrupted by a shipment of musical cigarette boxes he deems impossible to sell, precisely when Amalia Balash arrives in the shop. Determined to get hired, she makes a sale of one of the boxes. Georg and Amalia take an immediate dislike to each other, but find comfort in the intimate and stimulating letters they receive from their pen pals, who we soon learn, are actually each other. When Amalia arranges to meet her pen pal at a cafe and Georg discovers that she is his Dear Friend, rather than reveal the truth, he causes a scene, humiliating them both. Only he can undo what's been done, and only he can reveal the truth to the woman who loves him but doesnt know it.
Amalia Balish (Strong Soprano, 20s-30's) attractive, personable, shy. A little too sharp for her own good. A romantic.
Georg Nowack (Baritone, 30) Goodlooking, soft-spoken, well-read, personable, strong.
Ilona Ritter (Mezzo, late 30s)A clerk who is experienced in both life and men. Peppy but weary.
Steven Kodaly (Tenor/Baritone, 30's-40's) Handsome but slick and shallow - Ilona's lover, also having an affair with Maraczek's wife, a womanizer.
Ladislav Sipos (Baritone, 45)Agreeable but dull man. Browbeaten.
Arpad Laszlo (Tenor, 16-25)Bright young delivery boy. Hopes to one day own the Parfumerie.
Mr. Maraczek (Baritone, 50+) owner of the parfumerie, a stubborn perfectionist.
Headwaiter- (30's-40') A proud man with a singular goal of keeping his establishment romantic.
Busboy (20's-30's) A dancer at a romantic restaurant.
