BREAKDOWN

Synopsis: When Olivia, an aspiring artist, is faced with a life altering proposition during dark and uncertain times, she finds herself in a United Prison Families meeting, a support group for those with an incarcerated loved one. SHARED SENTENCES follows the lives of six individuals from various walks of life and explores how we define “family”. Written by Emily Joy Weiner (Co-Founder and Artistic Director of HOTM) and directed by Lisa Rothe, SHARED SENTENCES seeks to bring unique theatrical representation to the experience of millions of Americans who are currently serving time “on the outside

SEEKING:

NOTE: All characters are inspired by real people.

BARBARA: Female-identifying, white, late 70s-80s, former kindergarten teacher, mother of estranged daughter, widow, prison reform activist and founder of United Prison Families (UPF).

SEBASTIAN: Male-identifying, Latino 30s-40s, bartender, music fanatic, wears his heart on his sleeve.

HAROLD: Male-identifying, 50s-60s, Black, doorman in a luxury residential building, also a budding novelist, reserved on the surface, gentle, thoughtful.

CELESTE: Female-identifying, 40s-50s, Latina American, paralegal for a big law firm and studying to be a human rights lawyer, tough, determined, has been through it all.
