The Amazing Karnak: Male, 35-50 non-singing role; the narrator; a mechanical fortune-telling machine; think an ominous mechanical Santa Claus or God or Hal 3000; a deep, rumbling North American baritone voice, with a steady, measured, calm inflection that exudes gravitas but never pushed to comedic extremes; there is never any archness in the voice; must have the physical ability to be an animatronic machine; physically average in size; not too short, tall, rotund, or skinny; there is a huge amount of memorization required for this role. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities
Ocean O'Connell Rosenberg: Female, 18-25 18+ to play late teens; she is a combo of Logainne Schwartz and Grubenierre from Spelling Bee (without the lisp and the gay dads) and Reese Witherspoon from Election (only not as adorable); Alpha female; is the leader of the group, relentlessly competitive, sometimes cruel, though she sees herself as a virtuous person; high Broadway mix, with a pop quality; big range. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities
Mischa Alexai Bachinski: Male, 18-25 18+ to play late teens; adopted from the Ukraine as a teenager; he has thick Ukrainian dialect and a lot of rage; he is obsessed by Gangsta Rap (an enormous fan of the auto-tune phenomena); there is a hidden, soulful romantic side; Baritenor with the ability to sing lyrical Ukrainian folk music as well rap. Noel Gruber: Male, 18-25 18+ to play late teens; the only gay kid in Uranium; never had a relationship; obsessed by French New Wave cinema, he has fantasies of dying a tragic death, like a French prostitute; intellectual, biting wit, but he doesn't have enough hindsight or life experience to make him a snarky bitch; tenor, with a great falsetto; must be able to sing in the style of a French chanteuse. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities
Ricky Potts: Male, 18-25 18+ to play late teens; begins the play wordless and on crutches; suffers from a degenerative disease that has left him speechless and mostly immobile; he should be somewhat odd-looking and diminutive; he discovers at the beginning of the play that in this strange purgatory, he has regained all of these abilities; he reveals a secret inner life in which he is a Bowie-esque prophet from the Zolarian Starcluster, a society that evolved from cats; baritone rock voice; basic accordion and/or tumbling a plus. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities
Constance Blackwood: Female, 18-25 18+ to play late teens; overweight, and outwardly okay with it, but there is a very deep self-loathing. Will do anything for Ocean's friendship and allows herself to be used as a doormat; self-deprecating, lots of pain under the pleaser façade; dubbed the nicest girl in town, a title she secretly despises; very likable comic actress; alto belt, with a rock edge. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities
Jane Doe: Female, 18-25 18+ to play late teens; she was decapitated in the accident and no one claimed her body; even though she isn't headless in the piece (but often carries around a headless doll), the trauma of the accident leaves her discombobulated and removed; she reacts in a literal way and largely without emotion, almost robot-like; the other contestants are totally freaked out by her; in the show, she wears black contacts that block out her entire eye, so you can never tell what she's thinking, but yet you feel like you can see into her soul; actress must be comfortable wearing large contact lens; classically trained soprano with a flexible coloratura upper range, and some grit and meat in the lower register. Ella: (Soprano B3-Eb5) Though no one notices her beneath her rags and quiet demeanor, she is opinionated, charismatic, passionate, beautiful and funny. Idealistic and hopeful, she courageously challenges the prince to change the policies of his kingdom - and helps him discover who he truly is. Always her late father’s daughter, she is determined to see the good in everyone despite her hardships and suffering. We see her blossom into a confident woman.
Topher: (Baritone C#3 – A4) A misguided and lost prince who longs to do something important with his life. Though brave and heroic, he feels lonely and unfulfilled. Charming but NOT a stereotypical ladies man, he is thoughtful, appealing and innocent - with an unforced goofy streak. Moral, genuine and kindhearted, he is at a crossroads and must take control of his kingdom and his future.
Jean-Michel: (Baritone C3-G4) A feisty, passionate peasant determined to make a change for the starving class. Impetuous. A firebrand, but lacks authority and isn’t taken seriously as a revolutionary. He has a crush on Gabrielle, though her courtship is forbidden because they are from different social classes.

Quietly passionate, empathetic, and witty, she is drawn to Ella and Jean-Michel. Ironically aware that she doesn’t fit in.
Charlotte: (Mezzo-Soprano B3-F5) Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Brash, self centered, materialistic, snooty, loud, sassy and bratty, she has a ridiculously high, but unfounded opinion of herself. She never passes up an opportunity to be the center of attention.
Marie: (Soprano A3-Ab5) A friend to Ella and the town’s resident crazy lady and beggar woman, Marie is actually a fairy godmother in disguise. Wise, warm, otherworldly, and charming. Marie rewards Ella for her kindness by making her dreams a possibility.
Madame: (Mezzo-Soprano C4-D5 – Character Voice) Ella's selfish stepmother. The epitome of vanity and fashion. A ravenous social climber who values wealth, status and material possessions above all else. Unapologetically dismissive and sometimes cruel, Madame schemes her way up the social ladder.
Sebastian: (Baritone C3-F4) The kingdom’s Lord Chancellor. Though he is Topher’s trusted advisor, he is devious and selfish. Using propaganda and dishonesty, he keeps Topher isolated and in the dark about his kingdom. Sebastian rules without regard for the lower class, or anyone other than himself - and truly believes he deserves to rule the kingdom.
Lord Pinkleton: (Tenor D3-A4) The Lord Chancellor’s right hand man. Announces royal balls, banquets and even the weather to the villagers.
