Based on Tennessee Williams’s unproduced screenplay of his own classic short story, this new adaptation follows Ollie, a young farm boy who joins the Navy and becomes boxing champion of the Pacific Fleet. He then loses his arm in a car accident, and turns to hustling to survive. One of Williams’s most searing character studies, the play takes us through Ollie’s odyssey in a disenfranchised American underworld in the period before World War II. Ollie is eventually arrested for murder and sentenced to death, and prison meetings with a young divinity student change both their lives.

Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted)):

Ollie:

Early - mid 20s. Male hustler. Originally from a farm in Arkansas, he became the light heavyweight champion boxer of the Pacific Fleet before losing his arm and turning to hustling. Remains fairly fit. Broken, lost soul who still has great determination. Still gets embarrassed when he has to seduce a potential client.

Narrator / Sean:

20s - mid 30s. Narrator: In effect, the writer of the screenplay. Sean: Might be Williams as a younger man. Great insight and passion.

The Divinity Student:

Man, mid 20s - 30s. Serious and studious, but also driven by a need to have a spiritual impact. Clings to faith.

Lester / Others:

Male, 40s - early 50s. Lester: Wealthy “john”. Lives on Park Avenue.

Yachtsman / Prison Guard / Others:

Male characters, 50 - mid 60s. Actor in this track needs to be able to display strength. He is a brute as the Guard, but a bit more sophisticated as the porn movie director (“The Yachtsman”).

Stripper / Girl on the Yacht / others:

Female characters, 20s - 30s. Working-class, street-wise, with a lot of soul.

Willy / Others:

Male characters, 20s. Willy: A “femme” male hustler.

Soldier / Others:

Male characters, 20s. Soldier: Young, strong guy.
